Moraine Park Technical College (MPTC) is doing our part to help increase the number of females in IT with our Girls Make IT Happen, #ITgirls event on June 26 through June 29. The event will feature one day in each of the following IT disciplines: IT Tech Support and IT Network, Graphic Communications, IT Web Developer, and IT Mobile Apps and will run from 1-4 pm each day. Through Moraine Park Fair Trade College education efforts, IT and Corrections Club students are helping youth “Stay out of Traffic.” The anti-trafficking initiative began this past October when over 130 participants gathered at our Fond du Lac campus for “Make Fond du Lac a Traffic Free Zone.” This event was designed to bring awareness to the crime of trafficking in people for sex or labor globally, nationally, statewide and locally. Last fall I blogged about internet security and protecting yourself online. This is something my colleague, Jeff Sonnleitner, and I talk about extensively in my courses for the IT-Tech Support Specialist program and his courses for the IT-Network Specialist program here at Moraine Park Technical College. Recently President Trump signed a law effectively allowing your internet service provider (ISP) to collect your browsing data and sell it to whomever they choose.
They don’t even need your permission to do this. You can read more about that here. In light of this news I thought it prudent to revisit the VPN (Virtual Private Network) discussion and provide some more information on how you can protect yourself and hide your browsing history online. Moraine Park Technical College held our final IT Careers Completion Ceremony on March 6, 2017 through the U.S. Department of Labor Interface grant program. In 2014 Moraine Park received $995,662 of a $23.1 million statewide project. In total, 93 MPTC students earned 126 certificates helping to prepare them for IT careers. To date, 24 students have used their certificates into career pathways towards IT Associate degrees. Continue reading
