Moraine Park’s Medical Assistant, Medical Office Specialist, and Medical Billing Specialist students from all three MPTC’s campuses gathered at the Beaver Dam campus to enjoy an afternoon employment event.
The group of 40 students learned about resume writing and interview skills from MPTC Career and Employment Services, the benefits of professional certification from Gail Luttenberger from the Wisconsin Society of Medical Assistants, asked questions of a panel of healthcare hiring representatives, and participated in mock interviews with representatives from local healthcare agencies. The panel members, representing Froedtert, Aurora, Agnesian, Dean Healthcare, Beaver Dam Community Hospitals, and UW Clinics shared information regarding the vast number of positions available and what characteristics they are looking for in candidates they are looking to hire. The speakers noted that technical skills can be taught, but “fit” with the organization, professionalism, ability to work positively in a team, and treating patients and coworkers with care and kindness were top priorities.
At the event, it was announced that a new program in Medical Office Management was just approved by the WTCS. It is a degree laddering opportunity for graduates of Medical Assistant, Medical Office Specialist, and Medical Billing Specialist who wish to pursue an Associate’s Degree to elevate their career opportunities. The program will begin at MPTC in the Fall of 2016. The program includes leadership and management training that compliments medical assistant and medical office skill sets.
