Internships are key to building experience for a college student. Employers are much more likely to hire someone with internship and work experience, rather than someone with a generic resume.
Here are some reasons why you should explore internships:
On August 23, 2017, the final fourteen grant funded students successfully completed Moraine Park Technical College’s Nursing Assistant (CNA) boot camp–a rigorous three-week, 120 hour, 3 credit, learning experience. The school year is flying by and many around the State of Wisconsin are preparing and studying for water and wastewater operator certification exams. The exams are held in November and May.
As I teach many of the prospective operators in both disciplines, a subject that comes to mind is related to mathematics. Math is used in many career areas, and the same applies to the water and wastewater industries. When preparing for the exam, math will be worth reviewing and understanding. With today’s spreadsheets, hidden formulas, automated recording and other tools utilizing our various technologies, math behind the scenes is sometimes a forgotten skill.
But I will share a couple of stories with you that identifies the need to recall and utilize this skill. The good news is that Moraine Park Technical College’s Water Quality Technology program and water operator certification preparatory courses cover the operator related math and formulas well. Students who complete 50 to 100 hours of service learning during their time at Moraine Park will receive this award. CURLS! Some of us are born with them and some of us are not. There is hope for us not born with them … THE PERMANENT WAVE, also known as a “perm.”
The first attempt at creating curly hair was back in 1872. The beginning inventions involved thermal methods and no chemicals but that proved to degrade the hair. Another attempt was to wrap the hair in a spiral around rods connected to a machine with an electric heating device, then sodium hydroxide was applied and the hair was heated to 212 °F (100 °C) or more for an extended period of time.
The first attempts resulted in hair being burnt off and scalp burns. Continue reading
Moraine Park Technical College learned recently that it received approval for approximately $550,000 in Workforce Advancement Training (WAT) grants from the Wisconsin Technical College System. A total of six grant applications were submitted covering training in the following areas:
All six grant applications were approved with a total of 31 companies being served in this consortium, representing the largest amount in WAT grant funding received by Moraine Park since the grants first became available several years ago. With an emphasis on training incumbent workers, WAT grants support area organizations’ investments in their workplace training programs. Customized training developed under these grants are designed to help increase the skills of an organization’s existing employees, transform business processes, improve quality, boost productivity and improve overall competitiveness for participating businesses. Typical grant coverage averages around 50% of the organization’s total training investment for eligible training conducted between July 1, 2017 and July 31, 2018.
