Moraine Park CNC Bootcamp graduate honored by Governor Walker

     When Diane Stepp was laid off in August, 2012, she probably didn’t think six months later, she would be recognized at Governor Scott Walker’s January 16 State of the State address, honored for completing a vigorous 15-week CNC Machinist Bootcamp through Moraine Park Technical College. Stepp was one of 12 graduates who completed the first CNC Machinist Boocamp funded through the Wisconsin Covenant Foundation, Inc.
     The only female in her CNC class, Stepp was not intimidated by her classmates, having grown up with five brothers. “All of my classmates were very good people and very smart,” Stepp said. “It seemed like everyone really enjoyed themselves and supported each other. We were all there to succeed and that was a good feeling – it was never a competition.”            
     Each bootcamp participant was required to complete an internship at one of the partnering companies. Stepp was placed at Amerequip, in Kiel, for her internship and was very happy when they asked if she wanted to continue working with them in a full-time role as a CNC operator.

Moraine Park announces expansion in Washington County

     The Moraine Park Technical College District Board approved leasing a new College facility in Washington County’s Jackson Industrial Park during their Wednesday, Jan. 16, District Board meeting. The District’s mission includes a focus on responding to community needs and initiatives through partnerships such as workforce development.
     The expansion is in response to requests from Washington County-area employers for job training in welding, fabrication and other advanced manufacturing trade skills beyond the existing offerings at Moraine Park’s West Bend campus.           
     Moraine Park’s Jackson facility will bring welding, fabrication and additional, customized Computer Numerical Control (CNC) training to Washington County with a CNC lab, welding lab, two classrooms, restrooms, a reception area, break room, two offices, and a conference room to complete the space. The welding lab will feature two VRTEX 360 welding simulation stations, purchased from a $647,000 U.S. Department of Labor grant. The facility will offer robotic welding training in the future.       
     “I’m excited for the expansion in Washington County for educational training to meet the current workforce needs and to provide training in new areas, like robotic welding,” said Dr. Sheila Ruhland, Moraine Park president. “This facility will also provide opportunities to our secondary partners to meet customized training requirements.”  
     In Washington County, 24.4 percent of the county’s jobs are in the manufacturing industry, which is the highest concentration in the county. “With advanced manufacturing as a driver industry in Washington County, our success at fully leveraging opportunities for that industry is directly tied to a company’s capability for rapidly responding to changing demands on the skills of their workforce,” said Christian Tscheschlok, executive director of Economic Development Washington County (EDWC).                                  
     “This training center provides Moraine Park with capability to quickly flex with the unique training needs of individual Washington County area manufacturers,” added Tscheschlok, who said the EDWC sees Moraine Park’s new Jackson facility as a potential game changer.  “It offers a direct solution for enhancing the competitiveness of our area workforce and growth in companies in an ever-changing manufacturing environment.” 
     "I am very pleased that this facility will be available for the students in Washington County and also in our neighboring counties.  This is something that has been requested by members of our community, and I am happy that we can provide it,” said Mike Miller, Moraine Park District Board member and Washington County Board member.
     Moraine Park will negotiate a lease and start construction and remodeling as soon as possible with the goal of offering classes in September 2013. Moraine Park proposes entering a lease agreement for approximately 9,515 square feet of space, using 22 percent of a manufacturing building located in the industrial park.                  
     We balance the needs of our students and employers with the resources of our taxpayers, and the leased Jackson facility is a win-win-win,” said Richard Zimman, Moraine Park District Board president. “Our students will receive the additional training they need, and our employers will receive the skilled workforce they need — all at a price our taxpayers can afford through the less costly lease approach Moraine Park is taking for this new training center.  Zimman added that the Jackson facility will allow Moraine Park to be flexible so the College can adjust to market conditions and respond quickly to changing employment needs without a huge capital expense. The initial term of the lease is five years, from July 1, 2013, through June 30, 2018, with five, one-year optional extensions. The projected cost for the initial leasehold improvements is $800,000, and the operating lease is $4 per square foot for the base rent with additional costs for applicable common area maintenance fees.  Total annual operating cost for the first year is projected at $53,060. The lease agreement will need to be approved as substantially completed and forwarded to the Wisconsin Technical College System Board for their review and approval after final details are defined.                    
     Moraine Park was established in 1912 and is one of 16 technical college districts that make up the Wisconsin Technical College System. With campuses in Beaver Dam, Fond du Lac and West Bend, and regional centers in Hartford and Ripon, Wis., Moraine Park offers more than 100 associate of applied science degrees, technical diplomas, apprenticeships and certificates delivered in a variety of formats — classroom, online and blended. Moraine Park to offer free workshops for entrepreneurs through February

     Are you an entrepreneur? Thinking About Starting a Business? Decide if entrepreneurship is right for you.  Register and attend an upcoming free entrepreneurship workshop through Moraine Park Technical College. During the free workshop, participants will learn what it takes to be a successful entrepreneur, where ideas come from, how to judge if your idea is financially feasible, the anatomy of a business plan, how to conduct market research, types of business entities, regulations and requirements. Plus, take home a packet of great resources to help you get started. 
     Workshops are scheduled as follows: Thursday, Jan. 17 on Moraine Park’s Beaver Dam campus (10 a.m. – noon); Wednesday, Jan. 30 on Moraine Park’s West Bend campus (2-4 p.m.); and Tuesday, Feb.12 on Moraine Park’s Fond du Lac campus (6-8 p.m.)

Moraine Park to offer Financial Foundations Series, beginning Jan. 19

     The Financial Foundations Series – a series of four courses based on Dave Ramsey’s “The Seven Baby Steps for Financial Success” – coaches practical and relevant financial skills that empower participants toward a solid financial foundation. The author of Financial Peace, Ramsey is also the financial commentator on the nationally syndicated “The Dave Ramsey Show.”
     Led by Instructor Jeanine O’Brien, a certified debt elimination specialist, this series spans four courses. Part 1 covers savings, budgets and debt; Part 2 overviews college student essentials, family friends, philanthropy and consumer awareness; Part 3 teaches bargains, credit bureaus and insurance; and Part 4 discusses investments, retirement and savings plans. “We teach common sense, real-life financial principles that work,” O’Brien said. Each course in the series builds on the skills and knowledge learned during the preceding courses.

Moraine Park honored with LERN award

     Moraine Park Technical College’s STRAT program has been honored for excellence in programming by the Learning Resources Network (LERN), an international association in lifelong learning. The STRAT program, created by Moraine Park’s Economic and Workforce Development department, is a strategic partner in the growth of the business region.
     LERN’s primary criterion in selecting exemplary programs like STRAT was the quality of being at the leading edge of the field of lifelong learning.  In addition, the following criteria are considered: Originality, innovation, appropriateness and adaptability as a model for other programs, replicability, and measurable outcomes.  Julie Coates, vice president of Information Services for LERN, said that this year’s award nominees were among the highest quality ever submitted.  Moraine Park’s STRAT program was selected from a field of more than 100 entries from 4 countries.

Moraine Park instructor receives national certification

     Moraine Park Technical College Civil Engineering/Structural instructor Jim Olson always tells his students that graduating doesn’t mean their education is over. He put this advice into action by recently receiving the Revit Architecture 2013 Certified Professional certification after passing the extensive exam.       
     Olson joined design professionals from around the world in late November when he attended Autodesk University’s annual conference and exhibition in Las Vegas, Nev. While there, Olson shared and passed ideas, worked with other participants to solve problems, and formed professional relationships. Olson also took and passed the Revit Architecture 2013 Certified Professional Exam while at the conference, gaining an industry-recognized credential.   
      “Technology and software are constantly changing how the architectural, engineering, and construction industries do business. As instructors, we need to bring those changes into our curriculum,” said Olson.
     Olson, a Fond du Lac resident, has been teaching full-time at Moraine Park for the past six years. The information he gained from the Autodesk University conference and from taking the exam will be integrated into the courses in Moraine Park’s Civil Engineering/Structural Program.

Moraine Park celebrates the holidays by giving back

     At Moraine Park Technical College, students have been busy finishing up final projects, cramming for end-of-the semester exams, and registering for spring classes. Despite their active schedules, many student clubs and organizations are finding time to make spirits a little brighter for families in need this holiday season.  Moraine Park’s Fond du Lac, West Bend and Beaver Dam campuses have been decking the halls with boxes to collect food, toys, and clothing for various community organizations.          
     In Fond du Lac, the Straight and Gay Alliance (SAGA) club helped St. Paul’s church with over 900 families who preregistered to receive food for the Thanksgiving holiday. They assisted with registration, handed out turkeys, and helped carry food to people’s cars. The Student Veteran’s Association (SVA) is running a Christmas in a Shoebox campaign by packaging and mailing donated items to deployed troops. Moraine Park’s Cosmetology, Corrections, Radiography and Clinical Lab Technician clubs are all adopting families through the Salvation Army, or collecting nonperishable food items for donation to a local food pantry. Staff and units of the College are donating items to support Elijah’s Mantle/Ebony Vision. This local organization supports at-risk minority youth, ages 6-18 in the Fond du Lac area that are in need of clothing and shoes this holiday season. 
     The West Bend Student Senate is holding a toy drive this holiday season to provide for local youth and the ARTS club adopted a local family in need. The Beaver Dam Student Senate held a silent auction to benefit the Dodge County Humane Society and Clothes for Kids. Students on the Beaver Dam campus volunteered for more than 12 hours at Green Valley, an organization that serves individuals with disabilities in Dodge County. The Multicultural Club is sponsoring a toy drive, and the Electrical Power Distribution Club is ringing bells for the Salvation Army.
     On all three Moraine Park campuses, the IT club is holding a hat and mitten drive and Phi Theta Kappa honor society is sponsoring a family on each campus by holding a food and gift drive.

Kleefisch and Newson visit Veteran’s Job Fair at Moraine Park

 Lt. Governor Rebecca Kleefisch and Department of Workforce Development (DWD) Secretary Reggie Newson visited the veterans job fair on Wednesday, Dec. 12 at the Moraine Park Technical College in Fond du Lac. The job fair, organized by DWD’s Office of Veterans Services as well as other partners, is part of Governor Walker’s “Wisconsin Working” agenda to connect job seekers, including veterans, with new employment opportunities.
      “Our commitment to veterans includes providing opportunities for them to find family-supporting jobs,” Lt. Governor Kleefisch said. “Governor Walker’s proclamation of 2012 as the Year of the Veteran underscores his commitment to veterans, who along with their families have sacrificed so much for our nation’s protection and well-being.”
      “DWD is proud to host opportunities for veterans to connect with employers,” said DWD Secretary Newson. “The veteran-focused job fairs we’ve held this have been attended by over 2,400 veterans and 650 employers. We look forward to continuing to focus on serving our veterans. Through our Office of Veterans Services, DWD is able to serve more than 10,000 veterans each year.”
     In addition to the job fairs, DWD also coordinates the Veterans in Piping (VIP) program, which consists of an intensive 20-week pre-apprenticeship training course for participating veterans. Those who graduate are guaranteed a job as an apprentice pipefitter. Approximately 40 veterans have completed the training and found employment since VIP training began in 2011 in Wisconsin, the first state in the Midwest to offer the program
      DWD also has Local Veterans Employment Representative (LVER) and Disabled Veterans Outreach Program (DVOP) staff in comprehensive Job Centers and additional outreach locations throughout Wisconsin who are ready to assist all veterans with their employment search and serve as a resource for all veteran benefit programs. 
     Several veteran initiatives also took effect in July 2012 as part of the Governor’s “Wisconsin Working” agenda, including statutory changes that enable veterans to apply skills learned in the military towards earning a civilian degree, and providing a fee waiver to veterans applying for occupational licenses. Morna Foy selected as Wisconsin Technical College System President

     MADISON – The Wisconsin Technical College System (WTCS) today announced that Ms. Morna Foy has been selected as the 12th president of the WTCS.  She becomes the first woman to serve in this capacity in the 100-year history of the WTCS and will begin as president in January 2013.
     Ms. Foy’s appointment as president builds on her more than 20 years of experience working in Wisconsin State Government, including almost 15 years with the WTCS. She began her career in Wisconsin government with the Wisconsin Legislative Audit Bureau before becoming a Policy Advisor/Federal Relations Officer for the WTCS. Since 2005, she has served as the WTCS Executive Assistant and Vice President of Policy and Government Relations. In this capacity, she was responsible for executive duties on behalf of the System President and Governing Board,
directs the System’s legislative relations, budget development, communications, strategic planning and policy development.
     “The WTCS Board knows that Morna will hit the ground running as a strong leader who builds upon our past success so that the WTCS plays an even larger role in growing Wisconsin’s economy,” said S. Mark Tyler, WTCS Board President and chair of the search committee. “Her dedication to the WTCS and tireless advocacy on the importance of career and technical education will help the WTCS better meet the needs of business and industry at both the state
and local level.”

Moraine Park graduates second STRAT class

     The second STRAT (Strategy, Alignment, Talent) class at Moraine Park Technical College recently wrapped up and 11 new graduates are eager to put their acquired knowledge into practice. The STRAT program was developed by Moraine Park’s Economic and Workforce Development department, in partnership with Dr. Alan Patterson, president of MENTORÉ. This unique and innovative leadership experience that Moraine Park offers to businesses, engages individuals sponsored by their employers to participate in cross-functional development linking strategy and execution to achieve measurable results within their organizations. 
     Participants included Aimee Wendt of MAG; Melissa Worthington of Moraine Park Technical College; Josh Emanuel of The Goldsmith; Nick Hemling of ANIMART; Matt Tredor of Broan-Nutone, LLC; Bob Sippel of Mid-States Aluminum Corp.; Chris Cramer of Grande Cheese Company; Laura Schwartzburg of Lutheran Homes and Health Services; Doug Thompson of Amerequip Corporation; Lisa Lasack of ANIMART; and Karen Hunt of ANIMART.
