As part of its International Studies offerings, Moraine Park Technical College has upcoming language-learning trips to Mexico that community members can join.
The July and December excursions to Cuernavaca, Mexico, are offered in conjunction with Milwaukee Area Technical College. There are four July trips of various lengths from which to choose, each starting July 19 and returning July 28 or Aug. 4, 11 or 18. The December trips depart Dec. 27 and return Jan. 5, 12, 19 or 26.
Offered as a noncredit course, the trips are open to students, staff, alumni and community members and provide intensive training in the Spanish language for all skill levels from beginning to advanced. “Since this course is so intensive and takes place in a Spanish-speaking country, it’s an effective way to learn the language in a short time period,” said Bobbi Laine, Moraine Park dean of international education. “The course is helpful for business managers who work with employees who speak Spanish,” she added. Cultural seminars are also conducted.
Known as the City of Eternal Spring, Cuernavaca is located 50 miles south of Mexico City. Trip participants will attend the Cuauhnáhuac Language Institute, stay with a Mexican family and enjoy optional day visits to places such as Taxco, the silver capital of the world; Teotihuacan, the pyramids north of Mexico City; Tlayacapan, a town with a ceramic marketplace; Mexico City; and Lake Tequesquitengo, a resort.
