Matthew Bohn of Waupun, a fourth-year carpentry apprenticeship student at Moraine Park Technical College, earned a first-place gold medal in the carpentry competition at the 21st annual Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) National Craft Championships held March 20-23 in Nashville, Tenn. Bohn earned a berth at the national competition when in January he placed first in the ABC of Wisconsin Inc. State Skill Competition.

“This was a once-in-a-lifetime experience,” said Bohn, who was one of more than 150 top apprentices and trainees throughout the country competing in 13 different trade competitions. “I was happy to have had my family, employer and instructor there to support me and share in the excitement of the outcome.”

“The practical portion of the competition was where Matt really shined,” said Bohn’s employer, Rollie Pinno of R.A. Pinno Construction Inc. in Rosendale. According to Pinno, the competition included a three-hour written exam and a six-hour practical exam judged by construction craft professionals. “He really did well, but that was no surprise because it’s Matt’s everyday performance.”

The project consisted of four unrelated tasks:

·         Constructing a metal stud angled wall frame.

·         Laying out and cutting a rafter that matched the angle of the wall.

·         Installing base trim on a wall.

·         Building a wood form for a set of concrete steps.

Bohn’s carpentry instructor at Moraine Park, Jerry Schwengels, said, “Matt did just an excellent job on the carpentry project. I also know that Matt spent countless hours studying for the written exam. The skills and craftsmanship he demonstrated on the project were truly outstanding. Matt was the first competitor to finish and when the judges were done grading his work the mark was set to grade the others by. When Matt’s name was called for the gold medal, it was a priceless moment for Matt and all of his supporters!”

“Jerry Schwengels has had a constant record of well-trained, award-winning apprentices during his years at Moraine Park,” said Jon Waldhuetter, Moraine Park dean of apprenticeship and building trades. “This award is a testament to an outstanding young carpenter and a dedicated instructor."
