Moraine Park Technical College will debut a new Paramedic Technician associate degree program this fall, to be offered in West Bend.
According to Catherine Winters, RDH, MS, Moraine Park dean of health sciences and public services, the College has received several letters of support for this program because of the statewide need for paramedics. Those with advanced training can perform more difficult and demanding pre-hospital medical procedures, providing the vital attention needed to care for and transport the sick or injured.
Program courses will be held at St. Joseph’s Hospital in West Bend, with the clinical component taking place at several hospitals within the Moraine Park District. Ambulance ride-alongs will be included in the training.
Individuals who are interested in enrolling in the Paramedic Technician program are required to have a current Emergency Medical Technician – Basic license and must also enroll full-time in the core Paramedic Technician courses, which begin every August. In addition to the Paramedic Technician associate degree, Moraine Park offers an EMT – Paramedic technical diploma.
The core courses for the associate degree and the diploma are the same, according to Winters; the difference is that the associate degree includes coursework in general education. “An individual may want to complete the associate degree as many full-time fire departments require training as a paramedic and a firefighter, and also an associate degree or 60 hours of college credits,” she said. “Previously in order to achieve this goal many people have completed an associate degree in fire protection technician and a diploma or an associate degree in paramedic. Students now have the option to obtain an associate degree in paramedic and complete the certification courses in fire services at Moraine Park. They may also choose the associate degree in paramedic for career advancement opportunities in management and public services.”
