Girls math and science conference seeking workshop presenters

Presenters in the areas of math, science and healthy lifestyle/nutrition are being sought for the Girls+Math+Science=Opportunities (GMSO) event for middle school aged girls to be held on Nov. 3 at the Moraine Park Technical College campus in Fond du Lac.

The conference goals are to increase the awareness of careers in math and science, highlight how interests and abilities match the skills needed in these fields, and present women in math and science fields as role models.

The GMSO committee is seeking area educators and professionals to present 60-minute hands-on sessions, one to three times during the day-long conference. The sessions can be the same, as each will have a different group of girls in attendance.

Proposals from professionals in the areas of manufacturing, architecture, banking and accounting are especially encouraged.

Now in its third year, the 2007 GMSO conference is again expected to attract over 200 middle school girls from surrounding communities. The 2006 program had 216 participants and of those responding to a survey, 91% indicated they would recommend this conference to a friend.

Founding sponsors for the GMSO program are Agnesian HealthCare, Moraine Park Technical College and UW-Fond du Lac.

Proposals should be submitted by July 13. Presenters will be compensated and will have access to a budget for needed supplies.
