The Upward Bound program serving Fond du Lac, Ripon, and Beaver Dam high schools is recruiting now for the current school year. An informational meeting will be held Thursday, Oct. 15, at 6:30 p.m. in Room O-103 on Moraine Park Technical College’s Fond du Lac campus.

A pre-college TRIO program of the U.S. Department of Education, Upward Bound is provided to the three high schools by Moraine Park to help students from low-income families navigate the path to a bachelor’s degree at any post- secondary educational institution. The program is capped at 60 students, and a few vacancies are open this month.

Upward Bound participants in grades 9-12 meet individually with an advisor at their own high schools. Students remain in the program through their high school graduation. Regular topics include study skills, time management, scholarship searches and college selection. The students also visit colleges, go on field trips and attend workshops on careers and personal development, earning a monthly cash allowance for regular participation in required activities.

In addition to the required academic-year segment, a six-week summer school at Moraine Park’s Fond du Lac campus offers college-preparatory high school classes taught by high school teachers. The last week of the summer session is held at Marian University, where students live in the dorm for one week while they take classes. Field trips and special events are featured throughout that week.

All services are provided at no cost to qualified students or their families. To be eligible for Upward Bound, families must meet federal low income levels. Proof of income is required with the completed application. The most recent tax return or other statement of earnings is kept on file. Students must also be “first generation” college bound, meaning neither parent has a bachelor’s degree. (A parent may have attended college, but not completed the bachelor’s degree.) Interested students must be currently enrolled in grades 9-11 at Beaver Dam, Fond du Lac, or Ripon high schools.

To reserve your spot in the program today or more information, call Joyce Atkins, Moraine Park’s Upward Bound director, at 920-924-6381.
