Through an e-mail service hosted free by Microsoft, Moraine Park Technical College students get e-mail accounts and the College saves money.

Microsoft’s Windows Live@edu is similar to the Hotmail platform and is designed for colleges. Students have a Moraine Park domain name in their e-mail address. The Live@edu accounts are available for as long as students wish to keep their accounts open, and access is available via Internet connection from anywhere in the world. Students receive 10 gigabytes (GB) of e-mail storage, 25 GB of SkyDrive storage for files and photos, collaboration tools, MSN Messenger and calendaring. Also available is access to Microsoft Office Live Workspace, which allows users to store and share up to 5 GB worth of Word, Excel and PowerPoint files. In addition, Microsoft provides round-the-clock technical support.

According to Jim Blakeslee, Moraine Park’s vice president of information technology, if the College were to host and support a comparable student e-mail system, the cost to the college would be $720,000 over a five-year period.

Outsourcing to Microsoft’s Live@edu is a cost-effective way of providing students with a necessary communications tool. “Moraine Park is always researching the most efficient use of our resources while making sure our students have the communication tools for their education. After careful analysis, we determined the best e-mail option for our students and the College would be using this free Microsoft product,” said Dr. Gayle Hytrek, Moraine Park president. She indicated the students are pleased with the service and this was a good stewardship decision.

With campuses in Beaver Dam, Fond du Lac and West Bend, Moraine Park is one of 16 colleges that make up Wisconsin’s technical colleges. Moraine Park offers more than 100 associate of applied science degrees, technical diplomas, apprenticeships and certificates delivered in a variety of formats — classroom, online and blended. Training and technical assistance for businesses are also offered. For more information about Moraine Park, visit
