The Upward Bound pre-college program is recruiting now for the Summer Session and upcoming school year. An informational meeting will be held Tuesday, May 25, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the Ripon Middle School media center.

Upward Bound is a federal TRIO program of the U.S. Department of Education and provided by Moraine Park Technical College to help students in grades 9-12 from low-income families navigate the path to a bachelor’s degree at any post-secondary educational institution. The program serves Fond du Lac, Ripon and Beaver Dam high schools and is capped at 60 students. Interested students must be currently enrolled in grades 8 or 9 at Ripon Middle or High School.

Participants meet individually with an advisor at their own high school. Regular topics include study skills, time management, scholarship searches and college selection. The students also visit colleges, go on field trips and attend workshops on careers and personal development, earning a monthly cash allowance for regular participation in required activities. All services are provided at no cost to qualified students or their families. Students stay in the program through their high school graduation.

There is a required academic-year segment and a six-week summer school. Summer courses are college prep high school classes taught by high school teachers that get students ready for new classes in the coming fall term. Summer Session is held at Moraine Park’s Fond du Lac campus, with the last week spent at Marian University taking classes and staying in a dorm. Field trips and special events are planned that week.

To be eligible for Upward Bound, families must meet federal low-income levels. Proof of income is required with the completed application. The most recent tax return or other statement of earnings is kept on file. Students must also be “first generation” college bound, meaning neither parent has a bachelor’s degree. A parent may have attended college, but not have completed a bachelor’s degree.
