Moraine Park Technical College students from the Barber/Cosmetologist and Welding programs participated in the recent 2010 Wisconsin SkillsUSA State Leadership and Skills Conference at the Wisconsin Dells Convention Center.

Pablo Lugo of Allenton, a Welding program student, won the gold medal and will advance to the SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Conference in Kansas City, Missouri, in June.

Other students from the Welding program who competed were Kody Keipe of Green Lake and Ben Farvor of Fond du Lac. All three took a written test followed by three separate weldments that involved complicated print reading, layout and fabrication. They did one SMAW (shielded metal arc welding) on steel, one GMAW (gas metal arc welding) on steel and one GTAW (gas tungsten arc welding) on stainless steel.

Students from Moraine Park’s Barber/Cosmetologist program who competed in the Cosmetology competition include McKenna Fink, Katie Hellwig, Angela Otero and Danielle Riggs of Fond du Lac, Hannah Van Ooyen of Kewaskum and Jennifer Starr of Campbellsport. The competition featured a long hairstyle, a personalized style, haircuts based on a picture chosen by the technical committee, a written test and an oral interview.

SkillsUSA is the showcase for the best career and technical students in the nation. The philosophy of the event is to reward students for excellence, involve industry in directly evaluating student performance and keep training relevant to employers' needs.
