VanEerden one of 20 educators and only from Wisconsin selected for year-long program

Moraine Park Technical College’s Kathy VanEerden, dean of health sciences, is about to embark on a unique opportunity for nursing educators. The National League for Nursing has created a new leadership development program, LEAD, designed for nurse educators in rapid transition to positions of faculty and administrative leadership. Twenty nurse educators were chosen from colleges and universities around the United States to study under the program — including VanEerden, who is the only educator representing the state of Wisconsin.

According to VanEerden, the LEAD program will present the opportunity to network with national nursing leaders so the college is on the cutting edge in addressing current nursing issues. Through LEAD, VanEerden will have the opportunity to study for a year under the direction of Beverly Malone, Ph.D., R.N., FAAN and CEO of the National League for Nursing. Malone has over four decades of experience and is a recognized leader in the field.

“I am delighted to have this opportunity to share my perspective and insights with this talented group of emerging leaders,” said Dr. Malone. “LEAD promises to be an intensive and very worthwhile learning experience that, consistent with NLN’s core values of caring, integrity, diversity and excellence, will prepare all participants to be outstanding managers and visionary thought leaders for the 21st century and role models to the next generation.”

“LEAD will support the development of leadership strategies and innovative curriculum design,” said Van Eerden. “I am excited about joining this group of 20 to collaborate in developing leadership skills and strategic planning to support nursing and health care in our country. All of our efforts will support improving the general health of the population.”

LEAD participants will engage in varied activities that focus on strategic planning, building high performance teams, financial management and crafting personal plans for career advancement.
