Going head-to-head with 36 construction apprentices from across the state, two Moraine Park Technical College apprenticeship students competed in their areas of expertise during the Associated Builders and Contractors, Inc. (ABC) State Skills competition in Green Bay.
A first place finish for Electrician Apprenticeship student Brian Gammon, of West Bend, has him heading to San Antonio, Texas, for the ABC National Skills competition, April 12-14. “The ABC competition was almost like another day at work, just a little more stress,” said Gammon, who is a fifth-year apprentice. “It’s great to be moving forward to the national competition and I’m really looking forward to it,” he added.
Gammon, who works for K-W Electric, Inc. in Plymouth, got his start in the electrical field from a vocational construction class in high school and is now gaining a solid background in electrical work from Moraine Park’s apprenticeship program. Gammon also credited Moraine Park instructors, Mike Melaney and Mike Gradinjan, for helping prepare him for the competition.
Earning a second place finish at the ABC Carpentry Skills competition was William Brown of Ripon. Brown is a fourth-year apprentice in Moraine Park’s Carpentry Apprenticeship program. He is employed at North Central Construction in Fond du Lac and said Moraine Park prepared him well with construction knowledge before joining the field. “The ABC competition experience was fun,” said Brown. “It challenged me to complete a task while under pressure, use the skills I learned in class and to do quality work.”
Apprentices were able to compete in their area of study, including plumbing, carpentry, HVAC, electrical and sheet metal. The competitors were rated on skill, workmanship, safety and efficiency. The written, safety, and practical scores were then combined to determine the top three competitors in each trade.
Other Moraine Park apprentices competing at the State competition were: David Nett of Malone, employed by A.H. West Group, LLC of Appleton; and Adam Nisler of Waupun, employed by Helmer Electric, Inc. of Malone. Nett and Nisler competed in the electrical skills competition. Scott Walter of Oshkosh, who is employed with C-Sweeting Plumbing, LLC of Oshkosh, participated in the plumbing competition.
Moraine Park apprenticeship instructors include Gary Roehrig in carpentry, Patrick O’Neill in plumbing and Matt Bishop in electrical.
