Moraine Park breaks ground on Fond du Lac Campus addition

Heavy rain and storms rolled through as Moraine Park Technical College’s 2014-15 District Student Ambassador Kim Dickinson shared her thoughts on what the new Student Services Center addition and remodeling project at the Fond du Lac Campus will mean to her fellow students. She noted the new front entrance will serve as a focal point for prospective students but said it is what will be inside the new addition that will be the real benefit.

Heavy rain didn’t keep Moraine Park from breaking ground on its new Fond du Lac Campus Student Services Center addition and remodeling project on June 2. Ceremonial groundbreakers are, from left: Tim Flood, MPTC director of facilities; Mike Staral, MPTC district board member; Melanie Parma, associate and senior architectural designer, Somerville Architects & Engineers; MPTC President Sheila Ruhland; District Board Member Lowell Prill; Kim Dickinson, MPTC 2014-15 student ambassador; Mike Kadow, president, Somerville Architects & Engineers; Joey Clark, MPTC district student government and Fond du Lac campus student senate representative; and Adam Osier, Capelle Bros. & Diedrich.

“I have the opportunity to interact with students of all ages,” said Dickinson, a nontraditional student from the Beaver Dam area. “Regardless of age, background or gender, when I’m talking with my fellow students, they recognize the great opportunities their Moraine Park Technical College degree is going to give them; and they speak with pride about the college they’ve chosen to attend. This new addition will be another source of pride for Moraine Park’s student body.”

Moraine Park President Sheila Ruhland and District Board Member Mike Staral also spoke to the more than 70 students, community members, staff and others, who attended the June 2 groundbreaking. “The new entry space will provide us with the opportunity to serve a broader array of individuals who enter our facility each day,” said Ruhland. “Whatever their reason for coming to Moraine Park, this new addition and remodel will provide for a greater experience.

The 5,212 square foot addition and remodel project will include a new “One-Stop Shop” Student Services Center along with a more architecturally prominent main entrance to the area. A walk up service area for enrollment services; a separate area to provide services to current and potential student veterans; a concierge desk for visitors and students to assist with general information questions; offices for recruitment staff, academic advisors, and student counselors; and a handicap accessible entrance. The $1.5 million project includes professional fees, approvals and construction. An additional $204,100 will furnish and equip the addition. Capelle Bros. & Diedrich of Fond du Lac is the general contractor for the project.

The project is expected to be completed for the start of the Winter/Spring 2015 semester.
