Q:  What is the definition of a satellite?

A:  Satellites help scientists study Earth and space.

Q:  What kind of information can satellites provide?

A:  Satellites looking toward Earth provide information about clouds, oceans, land and ice. They also measure gases in the atmosphere, such as ozone and carbon dioxide, and the amount of energy that Earth absorbs and emits. And satellites monitor wildfires, volcanoes and their smoke.

Q:  How does this information help the world?

A:  All this information helps scientists predict weather and climate. The information also helps public health officials track disease and famine; it helps farmers know what crops to plant; and it helps emergency workers respond to natural disasters.edu_satellites4

Q:  Do satellites have an important job?

A:  Yes!! Satellites that face toward space have a variety of jobs. Some watch for dangerous rays coming from the sun. Others explore asteroids and comets, the history of stars, and the origin of planets. Some satellites fly near or orbit other planets. These spacecraft may look for evidence of water on Mars or capture close-up pictures of Saturn’s rings.

Q:  Do we have an important satellite right here at MPTC?

A:  Yes we do!

The MPTC Kiwanis Satellite Club is an extension of the Kiwanis Club of Fabulous Fond du Lac. The satellite club was established to allow Moraine Park employees, students, and the general public to join a civic organization in a convenient location, at a convenient time, with the same desire and interest to build community connections, network with colleagues, provide leadership growth, and participate in fund-raising and community service projects.   The Satellite Club meets every 2 weeks over the noon hour at MPTC Fond du Lac Campus.

The mission of Kiwanis is to change the world, one child and one community at a time.  Each year local Kiwanis clubs sponsor more than 150,000 service projects worldwide. Examples of our own Kiwanis projects with local impact include:  MPTC Ireland Study Abroad, Pink Pumpkin Run, summer pool passes, sponsorships of FDL and NFDL high school key clubs, Boys and Girls Club, FDL ARC, FDL High School band uniforms, Girls on the Run, Habitat for Humanity, Grief Relief, Boy and Girl Scouts, Dream Catchers, Salvation Army, FDL Bike Loop, Warming Shelter meals, Linus blankets, and more!

To fund our projects, Kiwanis members host 2 major fundraisers including Walleye Weekend in June and Pork Fest in September, plus smaller fundraisers including brat fries and FDL Fondue Fest with delicious homemade cheese curds!
