Homeschooling – What an unfamiliar concept

homeschool, three girls

Most of us, by now, have heard of or know someone that has or is homeschooling their children. But how many of us really know what that means?

Does it mean a family that is anti-social? Does it mean those children are not getting the socialization they need? Does it mean those families are “wacko” as I have heard us called? Continue reading

Homeschool Parents and the Higher Education System

Homeschool parent’s run the school and home, and that can be quite a balancing act. Keeping both running smoothly (well, at least moving forward; not too sure how smooth sometimes) involves time management, curriculum prep, teaching, motivating, coaching, and the list goes on and on. Synonyms for partnership include: cooperation, assistance, interest, sharing, community and ownership. At Moraine Park Technical College, we embrace all of these characteristics of partnership with our students. And homeschooled students are no exception and benefit tremendously from partnering with the college.

Our relationship starts before high school, as young students participate in events at Moraine Park designed to educate them and give them hands on opportunities to try out various careers for their future. I am confident that these experiences will lead to more research and learning after the event by the student and family. Continue reading

Learn while you work – Choose an apprenticeship program

Apprentice working of steel framing at Moraine Park

NOTE: This post was written by Charles Vine (Northcentral Construction Corporation.), who completed the ABC Carpentry Apprenticeship program at Moraine Park Technical College in spring 2016.

“The trades are for people that are not smart enough to go to college.”

This was a phrase I heard numerous times throughout high school and continue to hear. Looking back on my four years at MPTC, partnered with Associated Builders and Contractors, I still laugh at that statement. Continue reading
