Student Earns QuickBooks Certification as Hiring Strategy

The Moraine park accounting curriculum includes training in two of the most popular small business accounting programs: Sage 50 (formerly called Peachtree) and QuickBooks.  Students are also provided the opportunity to complete the QuickBooks certification exam at a reasonable cost. The exam tests technical abilities in order to demonstrate accounting proficiency, and Nancy chose to complete the certification in order to “stand-out from other applicants.”

Nancy is the first college graduate in her extended family, but her inquisitive mind and the encouragement of a high school teacher provided the requisite spark. Self-motivation and effort propelled Nancy to earn a BS at UW-Madison and a teaching certificate at Silver Lake College. Continue reading

IT & Corrections Clubs Present: Stay Out of Traffic!

Through Moraine Park Fair Trade College education efforts, IT and Corrections Club students are helping youth “Stay out of Traffic.” The anti-trafficking initiative began this past October when over 130 participants gathered at our Fond du Lac campus for “Make Fond du Lac a Traffic Free Zone.” This event was designed to bring awareness to the crime of trafficking in people for sex or labor globally, nationally, statewide and locally. May is Motorcycle Awareness Month

The weather is getting nicer (even in Wisconsin!) and there are more bikes on the road.  Motorists are asked to stay alert for bikes, but motorcyclists need to remember they are harder to see and ride accordingly.  The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) reminds riders that motorcycle safety starts with 5 = zero – 5 key points equals zero deaths on Wisconsin roadways.

“Teaching Fellows was a very worthwhile effort”

Several months ago, eight faculty including myself, were selected to take part in the inaugural MPTC Teaching Fellows Program. Our mentor for the program is Dean of General Studies, Dr. Jennifer Lanter. During the program, faculty shared teaching experiences, gained knowledge related to learner-centered teaching approaches, discussed innovative teaching practices in a collaborative environment, and explored new teaching strategies. My name is Danielle Cook. I’m a surgical technologist instructor at Moraine Park Technical College, and was fortunate to be one of the eight faculty members selected to participate in the first Moraine Park Teaching Fellowship program this academic year. Faculty from different campuses and program were selected to share their teaching experiences, research various teaching methods and techniques, develop our understanding of how students learn, participate in peer evaluation, and research a question related to our own teaching.
