When you hear “Boot Camp” …

Students gaining muscle memory on the virtual welders the first week of class

Boot Camp.

For some these two words have a military connotation.

But that’s not who we are.

A google image search will reveal fitness classes with people running, doing pushups, and generally sweating their way to good health.

Moving in the right direction, but with a different kind of fitness.

Part of the Merriam-Webster definition is: “a program or situation that helps people become much better at doing something in a short period of time.”

Spot on. But there’s still more.

What if, when you saw the words Boot Camp, you thought… Continue reading

7 biggest mistakes when filing the FAFSA

Kim Demaa in Financial Aid

Don’t fall for it! Here are seven common mistakes applying for financial aid:

Not Completing the FAFSA

Students state all kinds of reasons: “The FAFSA is too hard,” “It takes too long to complete,” I never qualify anyway, so why does it matter.” It does matter. By not completing the FAFSA, students may be missing out on the opportunity to qualify for what could be thousands of dollars to help pay for college.

Not Being Prepared

The online FAFSA has gotten a lot easier over the last few years. But, the key to making the FAFSA simple is being prepared. Students can save a lot of time by gathering their information before they start the application. Continue reading

Parking lot or fishbowl?

Brenda Flanigan posing for a parking lot blog

When does a parking lot double as a fish bowl?

Perhaps the intent of a parking lot is just to store vehicles while their occupants conduct business nearby. This is frequently true. Yet upon further inspection, a real parking lot reveals a life of its own, sometimes even a little microcosm of humanity.

For example, I may or may not have seen some, shall we say, extraordinary activity in our own College parking lot. The vagueness is to protect the innocent, or at least reassure them that in no way are their activities being judged. Continue reading

Lights. Camera. Excellent. Moraine Park students shine on FOX 11

Fox11 photo with Culinary students and instructor

Moraine Park Technical College culinary students Paul Oosterhouse and Cherie Becker were featured on FOX 11’s “Good Day Wisconsin” on Easter Morning, preparing  frittata, biscuits and lemon meringue pies.

Take a look at the video! They did an amazing job!

What’s also amazing, though, are the journeys these students have been on that has led them to the Moraine Park culinary program.

Here’s a bit more about Paul and Cherie, why they came to Moraine Park, and their thoughts on the pressures of appearing on TV … Continue reading

Running 152 miles in six days. This is for you, Alice.

Michelle Schmidt running

My name is Melissa Schmidt. I’m a Transition Specialist at Moraine Park Technical College, which means I’ll be helping students move from their GED/HSED into programs, and also helping dual credit high school students move into programs. I’m also encouraging and helping students who may have been part of a certificate program or technical diploma transition into an AAS degree. I offer that extra bit of time and attention that some students may require to navigate resources our College has to offer so that they may be successful.

Speaking of attention …

March is Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Awareness Month, and this topic has a lot of personal meaning to me.

In fact, I’m soon going to be running 152 miles in six days (think six consecutive marathons!) for this important cause. Yes, 152 miles!

You’re probably wondering two things: “Why?” and “How!?”

Well, I’m here to tell you, and, I hope you’ll be inspired to help those battling MS in your own way, too! Continue reading

Attend classes via robot? Reflecting on Innovations 2016 conference highlights

Robot picture with Bruce Forciea

The following is a personal reflection of the Innovations 2016 conference by Bruce Forciea, anatomy and physiology instructor at Moraine Park Technical College:

It’s a Monday evening in Chicago and I am enjoying the wonderful lobby of the Sheraton Grand hotel after another day of the Innovations 2016 conference. The Innovations conference is a national event that showcases best practices for teaching and new ideas for community colleges. I always find conferences and public speaking a refreshing change from teaching my Anatomy and Physiology courses here at MPTC. My presentation yesterday on Audio/Video production went well and afterward I was able to take a deep breath, relax and, focus on learning. I attended a smorgasbord of presentations over the past two days covering a variety of topics. Here are some of the highlights. Continue reading

Vintage black and white photo of truck and people by Giddings and Lewis

Shown in this undated photo, Fond du Lac Vocational School students help unload a Giddings and Lewis truck.

The College has maintained partnerships with many business and industry entities today.
