Build it and they will come

Have you been to Moraine Park’s Jackson Regional Center?  If you have, you will know that it’s the home of Moraine Park’s newest and largest welding lab and located in the Northwest Business Park about ½ mile from Hwy 60 and Hwy 45 interchange in Jackson, WI.

Did you also know that there is a high demand for welders in the manufacturing industry?  This is due to the great importance of a welder in the manufacturing process and the number of baby boomers retiring. Continue reading

Boot Camps: The Student View – Part One

Female CNC boot camp participant on machine

Manufacturing boot camps have become a staple at Moraine Park over the last four years and continue to keep going strong.  Throughout those four years, we’ve promoted our Manufacturing Skills Academies for their job placement rates and life-changing stories – and we’ll continue to do so. Peanut butter cost how much when they graduated?!

Vintage black and white photo of nursing students

With election season in full swing, this week’s “Throwback” goes back to the year the voting age in the United States was officially lowered to 18 years old.

The year was 1971, and here’s a look at Nursing Assistant students who graduated from Moraine Park Technical College that year.

Wonder what else their world was like back then?   Continue reading

53 did it! So can you! – Nursing Assistant boot camps are huge success

Moraine Park nursing assistant female grads

This summer, 53 students successfully completed Moraine Park Technical College’s Nursing Assistant (CNA) boot camps – a rigorous three-week learning experience. Additional camps are planned for January and March, 2017!

Funded by the U.S. Department of Labor Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College Career Training (TAACCCT) ACT 4 Healthcare Grant program, the CNA boot camps condense a typical 8- or 16-week, three-credit Nursing Assistant course into an accelerated format. They provide classroom theory, laboratory experience and clinical learning that teaches students the skills to perform duties such as taking vital signs, bathing, dressing, making beds, and other direct resident care. Community agencies are used for clinical learning and include long-term care settings. Offered at all Moraine Park campuses – Beaver Dam, Fond du Lac and West Bend – the grant funded CNA boot camps will continue through March of 2018. Continue reading

Always a new challenge …

Men working in IMC department at Moraine Park

“You’ll never be bored if you choose a career in Industrial Maintenance – there’s always a new challenge. Being in Industrial Maintenance means being a problem solver, knowing how to prioritize, and having a massive knowledge base since multiple things will break at the same time, for different reasons, on different kinds of equipment, throughout the whole plant; Even if you’ve never seen any of if break before, you have to know what to fix first, figure out how to fix it best, and prevent further equipment failures in the future.” said Gerry Vanderloop, Industrial Maintenance Boot Camp Instructor.

For Vanderloop the field of Industrial Maintenance never stops providing a learning environment, so when MPTC offered Vanderloop the opportunity to teach Industrial Maintenance boot camps this spring, and another starting August 10, he gave up some of his retirement days to get back in the classroom. Opportunity is knocking: ‘Test Drive’ CNC & Welding careers

Reasons to come to Test Drive:

  1. I don’t know anything about being a CNC machinist.
  2. I am a trained welder.
  3. I’ve welded some pieces together before, but I don’t have formal training.
  4. I don’t think I have a interest in manufacturing careers.
  5. I’ve never worked in manufacturing and want to get a taste for it.
  6. I don’t know what I want to do next.
  7. I have no plans on Tuesday, and I would just like to make something in the workshops.
  8. I want to meet the employers that are part of the boot camps.
  9. I think the boot camps might be for me.

Reasons not to come to Test Drive:

“It has opened many doors” – Boot camp students share their experiences

Moraine Park CNC Test Drive event with two males

Manufacturing skills are in high demand and the manufacturing industry continues to expand, Moraine Park Technical College Economic and Workforce Development is giving students the opportunity to gain those skills by offering short-term training boot camps. We often boast about the success of students who leave this short-term training opportunity and go on to succeed, not just in steady jobs, but in careers. We want you to be successful long after you leave, and part of that success comes from finding the right fit in an internship.

What’s the value of an internship?

It’s a chance to show employers your skills, while making sure that they’re a fit for you too. It’s an extended job interview – a chance to shine off paper. It’s an opportunity that could lead to a new future.

But maybe it’s better if you heard it right from the source. Meet our spring 2016 boot campers: Continue reading
