So many lives are affected by cancer. Karen Jo Dobyns is a four year survivor! In October of 2014, Dobyns, a Fond du Lac Realtor, was diagnosed with Malignant Breast Cancer, and had to have a total mastectomy.
Moraine Park’s 2017 Great Pink Pumpkin 5K Run/Walk featured roughly 525 pink-clad participants and raised more than $11,000 for Breast Cancer Recovery and student scholarships.

The third annual Great Pink Pumpkin Run was held Oct. 15 at the College’s Fond du Lac campus. Co-chairs Brenda Schaefer, Moraine Park social science instructor, and Jeff Stueber, business management instructor, said they’re thankful for the support the event received in raising both awareness and funds for a good cause. She didn’t know when. But deep within her soul, she knew it was coming. Some day. Some day …
Some day.
Her mother. Her grandmother. Her aunt. Her uncle. All passed away from cancer.
So for Renae O’Laughlin – a sweet 60-year-old housekeeper here at Moraine Park Technical College with a vibrant, positive spirit – getting a diagnosis of cancer seemed inevitable.
“I’ve had so many family members die from cancer, so it wasn’t a matter of ‘If I’ll get cancer.’ I’ve just always had the mindset that I was going to get cancer – that it was just a matter of time,” Renae said.
