Albert Einstein is known to say, “The only source of knowledge is experience” and there is much experience to gain while preparing for a future career. Students of the medical assistant program develop the skills to take medical histories, record vital signs, prepare patients for examination, collect and prepare laboratory specimens, perform basic laboratory tests, draw blood and instruct patients about medications or special diets. Medical office specialist students perform administrative tasks such as billing and insurance, greeting patients on the phone and in person, handling correspondence, scheduling appointments and updating patient records. As we begin to look at options for a career, we may consider education, maybe on-the-job training, or self-study and activity, to prepare for a particular career of choice. There are many options available for the varying careers. One career field that sometimes is overlooked is related to water quality and water management. There are many career options in the water quality and water management fields. Becoming a professional in this career field can include formal education, on-the-job training, and even self- study. There are many paths into this interesting, highly-rewarding, sustainable, and dynamic career field.
An option that may be of interest to many people looking into careers in the field, is an Associate Degree in Water Quality Technology from Moraine Park Technical College. Moraine Park’s program is an accredited degree offered in an online format. Although we all have a competitive spark living inside of us, some have physical limitations that prevent them from participating in athletic events. Enter the Angels of my TEAM TRIUMPH. Disabled athletes, known as Captains, become part of a team of able-athletes known as Angels. Captains provide inspiration and a sense of joy and excitement all the while being pushed by an Angel in a race using a specially designed chair. Captains and Angels share their moment of glory together when they cross the finish line as a team.

Think life has handed you setbacks too large to overcome? Try telling that to DeWayne Sexton. Losing a mother as a child. Being separated from his siblings growing up. Reuniting only to have his brothers be killed shortly after. Joining the military and losing many close friends in battle. Losing his last remaining brother to a drunk driver. Being diagnosed with cancer. Feeling too old and too lost and too worthless. DeWayne has seemingly been through it all – and has somehow weathered all these struggles to do remarkable things.
One of those remarkable things is being named our 2017 Student of the Year. We couldn’t be more thrilled to give him this honor. To say that DeWayne is deserving is a tremendous understatement.
