Take a Test-Get Ahead of the Rest

Students are reading books and taking notes for exam preparation.

Everyone wants to get ahead, race car drivers, jockeys, and yes, even college students. Finding ways to stay ahead of rising educational costs can be a huge benefit during the college years.

Students at Moraine Park already enjoy some of the lowest tuition rates among Wisconsin’s colleges and universities. Even so, another part of keeping college affordable is finding ways to decrease the amount of time (and money) spent completing a degree. At Moraine Park. students have a unique option to minimize their costs and maximize their credit earning potential through the school’s Credit by Exam opportunities.

The Credit by Exam process allows students to earn college credit and fulfill program requirements through the successful completion of an exam. Taking advantage of the Credit by Exam program can certainly put MPTC students ahead as they can obtain college credits in less time and for less money than they would by attending (and paying for) a traditional course.

Never a doubt! 100% National Certification Pass Rate

MLT Class of 2019

Graduates from Moraine Park’s Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) class are beginning new careers as certified Medical Laboratory Technicians!

This year, nine students graduated from the program and have begun working in the field. All of the students successfully passed the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) National Certification Exam on their first attempt to become official MLT (ASCP) employees. This is quite the accomplishment, since the national average for passing the ASCP Board of Certification Exam on the first attempt is 83 percent.

Medical Laboratory Technicians play a main role in the diagnosis and treatment of patients through evaluation of patient specimens and reporting accurate results to physicians and other health care team members. The need for skilled professionals is in high demand as the field of laboratory science continues to expand and a large number of the current workforce is retiring. Employment opportunities are abundant throughout the United States.

For more information about this career, contact Linda Bau, MLT Program Director at lbau@morainepark.edu or (920) 924.3314.

I hope to hear from you soon!

Community Engagement = Fun for a Cause

Moraine Park Trivia Team

Getting engaged in their community, all while having fun, was what some Moraine Park employees recently did, as they took part in the 2019 FDL Literacy Services Team Trivia fundraising event.

Melissa Koppenhaver, Erika Lloyd, Kristine Buchanan and Sarah Nett, aka the Moraine Park Quad Squad, earned a strong 3rd place overall finish. The Quad Squad answered questions ranging from movies, sports, Wisconsin trivia, history, and more. What put the team over the edge was answering the bonus question:  Which Impressionist painter’s grandson was an academy-award nominated film director? The answer:  Pierre Auguste Renoir.  A big “Woot! Woot!” on getting that one correct!

“We had so much fun supporting FDL Literacy and MPTC,” said Lloyd, who brought along a little extra team support with a stuffed Maximus mascot.

MPTC’s Basic Ed area also took part in the fun. The Moraine Park Trivia Crushers team was made up of Kathy Mueller, Deb Schuh, Jamie Russell and Pete Snyder.

MLT Students Tie Blankets for Children’s Hospital

This year, the Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) Club decided to tie blankets and donate them to the Milwaukee Children’s Hospital. This activity was done before the winter break to spread some holiday cheer to those in need. A total of 13 blankets were completed by eleven MLT students, and a couple of helpers (their children). We had a great time completing the project while watching a holiday show. To celebrate our success, we ended the night with pizza!

As the adviser for the Medical Laboratory Technician club, I encourage anyone who is interested in pursuing a healthcare career with excellent employment opportunities to contact me to learn more about laboratory medicine and the role we have in helping physicians to diagnose, treat, and monitor the health status of their patients.

For more information, you can email me at lbau@morainepark.edu or call (920) 924-3314.

WHEELS OF FORTUNE: Special project helps boy with health troubles

Mason and women on trike and two children behind

Moraine Park Technical College mechanical design and engineering students had many great things to say after completing a special bike project to end the school year:

“It was fun to do [something so] meaningful,” said Tyler Hess from Random Lake.

“I’m just glad we got the opportunity to help,” said Jonathan Schalow of Farmington.

“I love being outside; and am glad I could help someone enjoy the outdoors a little more,” said Jacob Fendt of Hartford.

But in the end, nothing said more on a cloudy May afternoon than the roaring laughter of 11-year-old Mason Schommer of West Bend; his wide smile utterly contagious as he sat alongside his mother, Megan, on a specially-modified, two-person trike. Continue reading

Our academic year is winding down quickly! I am sure that the students graduating in May feel like the semester flew by! This year, as in past years, the prospective graduates attended the American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science (ASCLS) Wisconsin annual convention April 3 – 5. This event allows students to network with others in the profession, meet with recruiters, learn about trends in laboratory medicine and compete in the student bowl.  As an Medical Lab Technician (MLT), they will work in a field that studies body fluids to assist physicians in diagnosis and treatment.
