New Cosmetology Licensing Laws – Will It Affect You?

Governor Walker recently signed new laws related to the Cosmetology/Barbering industry.  Some of the changes are:

  • The managers and instructors licenses have been eliminated.  That means that all licensed cosmetologists will be able to work as a manager or instructor without the additional licensing.
  • Licensees will be able to work outside of a licensed establishment as long as they have proof of licensure with them.  This will be beneficial for stylists who perform services for bridal parties outside of a salon.
  • Stylists that move from another state to Wisconsin are no longer required to have 4,000 hours of work experience to become licensed in Wisconsin.
  • Continuing education has been eliminated.

These are examples of the new laws affecting the industry.  The Cosmetology Examining Board will be meeting in December 2017 to determine how the rules will be changed to interrupt these new laws.
