Three females sitting at table at Froedert event

Students from the MPTC Medical Assistant,  Medical Office Specialist,  and Medical Office Management programs recently attended the annual Medical Assistant/Medical Office Employment Event on the Fond du Lac campus.

The event included:

  • Round table discussions with MPTC graduates and employers where students had an opportunity to ask graduates about their positions and why they enjoy working for their employer
  • Presentations from MPTC Career and Employment Services and learning the benefits of professional certification
  • Panel discussion where students engaged with several area employers (Froedtert, Aurora, Agnesian, Dean Healthcare, Beaver Dam Community Hospitals, and UW Clinics) to inquire about each organization, job openings, roles and responsibilities, certification, salary, and advancement opportunities.
  • Mock interviews – students put their interviewing skills to test through mock interviews conducted by employers.

Employers shared excitement about  the event and potential recruits.  Darlene Helming, Recruiter at UW Health commented, “During the lunch and panel sessions, the students asked the employer partners well thought out questions regarding practicum placement and employment. UW Health currently has over 40 Medical Assistant positions. It is refreshing to see students excited about their career path.”  Becky Inneger, Recruiter from Aurora Health Care shared similar sentiments, “I thought the event was great; it gave students, alumni and employers the opportunity to connect and have open discussions. The panel is my favorite part, as it opens conversation with multiple employers on similarities and differences in the workplace.”

According to the Bureau of Labor’s Occupational Outlook Handbook, the employment of medical assistants is projected to grow 23 percent from 2014 to 2024, much faster than the average for all occupations. The growth of the aging baby-boom population will continue to increase demand for preventive medical services, which are often provided by physicians. As their practices expand, physicians will hire more assistants to perform routine administrative and clinical duties, allowing the physicians to see more patients.
