Moraine Park Nursing Student Receives College’s First DAISY Award

Moraine Park Technical College Nursing student, Carrie Kuehn of Beaver Dam, received the College’s first DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nursing Students on Friday, Dec. 17, at the Beaver Dam campus Pinning Ceremony.

The award was created to recognize and celebrate nursing students for the above-and-beyond care and compassion shown to patients and their families. The DAISY Foundation hopes that this program will inspire and motivate students to provide the best clinical skills possible and to impact patients and families with human spirit and kindness.

Kuehn was nominated by a fellow Moraine Park Nursing student, Shane Keck.

“Carrie is an inspiration at clinical,” Keck said. “She is such a professional and so quick at clinicals that we all marvel at her competency. She’s also unbelievably kind and picks others up when they’re down and struggling. Carrie is a phenomenal leader and I truly believe she’ll be a shining star of an RN someday soon.”

Kuehn, a fourth-semester student, was chosen through a blind selection process by Moraine Park’s DAISY committee made up of three Moraine Park representatives and one advisory member. Nominations for the award can come from any patient, staff nurse, fellow students, faculty or member of the community that the student has positively impacted.

“I had no idea I would be receiving this award,” Kuehn said. ‘It came as a complete surprise, and I am honored to have even been nominated. I’ve wanted to be a nurse since I was a child, so the recognition means everything to me.”

Thanking Oncology Nurses- Breast Cancer Awareness Month

close-up partial view of hand holding breast cancer awareness ribbon

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and Moraine Park would like to extend a sincere thank you to those who devote their career to the fight against cancer.

We had the opportunity to speak with a couple of our alumni who work at the Agensian Cancer Center- here’s what they had to say:

Kelly Hagner- Nurse Practitioner

2006 MPTC Graduate-nursing

Kelly Hagner

“Working at the cancer center is like no other job, I feel. Every single day you come to work you have the opportunity to make a difference in someone lives. Whether it be the lives of the patient or the family members. When cancer is diagnosed to a patient, it doesn’t just affect the patient. It affects everyone from spouses, to children, to mother and fathers. I have had the opportunity to cry with patients, laugh with patients and jump with joy with patients. Often people think that cancer is always such a negative thing, unfortunately that is incorrect. We have treated hundreds of people and saved their lives. We have helped patients live longer, and not be scared. We have held their hands and listened to their stories while supporting them. Every day is not guaranteed but with amazing staff we at the cancer center make the journey less scary. We treat everyone like family!”

Annice Klapperich, RN

2016 MPTC Graduate- nursing

Annice

” I work as an RN in Radiation Oncology at the Agnesian Cancer Center. At the cancer center, I work with an incredible team and technology to treat patients with various cancer diagnoses. Radiation Oncology is a fascinating field to work in and I am lucky to have an opportunity to learn something new everyday. However, the best part of my job is the opportunity to build relationships not only with the patients, but with their family as well. I hope to make a positive impact in my work and to make a difference in the lives of others, as the patients and their families have made such a difference in mine. ”

Denise Schwoch, RN

2009 MPTC Graduate- nursing

Denise

“When I decided to become a nurse, oncology was always my motivation.  This is a tough field but I find it extremely rewarding. I love the relationships that develops with patients and their families during their most vulnerable time.  I am forever grateful to be a medical oncology infusion RN!”

Exciting Changes to MPTC Medical Assistant Program

medical assistant

Moraine Park Technical College Medical Assistant Program is excited to announce scheduling changes to our West Bend Cohort model.

Students have asked for additional options and we listened. Yes we hear you!!  The improved cohort model will have the same great characteristics of students moving through the entire program at the same pace, with the same group, and at the same great location.  The big change is…….wait for it…..

The in-class commitment is now 2 days a week instead of 3!

Wait, what?  How did you remove an entire day from the program?

Great question!  We will now be incorporating an online course into each semester to allow students flexibility in completing their coursework. The previous schedule had students coming to campus every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, and while we know you all love seeing your fellow classmates and instructor three times a week, we also wanted to allow you to have more time for balance in your work, school and family life.

The new schedule will have you in class every Monday and Wednesday. Did we forget to mention the updates to our classroom, including more equipment and mock exam rooms? You need to check it out!

Our new schedule also helps to better align our courses to our program guidelines. You will be enrolled in courses where the content relates to each other at the same time. This allows for more comprehensive learning! I mean if you are learning about how the Digestive System works in Human Body it would be helpful to be learning the terminology in Medical Terminology in the same week, right?

Concerned about online learning? Rest assured that your time in class will allow for opportunities to receive additional resources and assistance with the completion of any online requirements. Your qualified instructors have taught it all and can offer assistance in any program course! We know now, more than ever, the importance of having qualified healthcare professionals in our community. The need to provide quality care will never change.

So, now is great of time as any to explore a career in healthcare and look into becoming a Medical Assistant.

We cannot wait to have you join us! Still have more questions? Please feel free to reach out!

MLT Students Tie Blankets for Children’s Hospital

This year, the Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) Club decided to tie blankets and donate them to the Milwaukee Children’s Hospital. This activity was done before the winter break to spread some holiday cheer to those in need. A total of 13 blankets were completed by eleven MLT students, and a couple of helpers (their children). We had a great time completing the project while watching a holiday show. To celebrate our success, we ended the night with pizza!

As the adviser for the Medical Laboratory Technician club, I encourage anyone who is interested in pursuing a healthcare career with excellent employment opportunities to contact me to learn more about laboratory medicine and the role we have in helping physicians to diagnose, treat, and monitor the health status of their patients.

For more information, you can email me at lbau@morainepark.edu or call (920) 924-3314.
