#Domestic Violence Awareness

The Prevention Education Committee is dedicated to awareness and education in order to empower individuals to make changes ending violence within our community as a subcommittee of the Coordinated Community Response team of Fond du Lac.  https://www.facebook.com/fdlpec

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

Domestic violence occurs when one intimate partner seeks to maintain power and control over the other partner, which may be exhibited as verbal or emotional abuse, intimidation, isolation, economic abuse, physical abuse, sexual abuse, or other abuses. The trauma from these abusive behaviors can have significant impact on survivors and can, ultimately, result in death.

According to the annual Wisconsin Domestic Violence Homicide Report from End Domestic Abuse Wisconsin, 811 victims were killed in domestic violence homicides from 2000 through 2019 in Wisconsin, excluding homicides involving legal intervention. In 2019, domestic violence claimed 72 lives, including both victims and perpetrators. Tragically, past domestic violence homicides in Wisconsin have claimed the lives not only of victims, but of their family members, friends, co-workers and law enforcement.

Internship Draft Day at Lambeau Field

Internship Draft Day Logo

Get off the bench and attend Internship Draft Day at Lambeau Field- North Balcony on Thursday, November 4 from 3-6:15 p.m.

Internship Draft Day is more than just a job fair. It’s a chance for students to meet with over 50 companies with over 200 paid internships, co-ops, part-time and full-time positions. Students have the opportunity to network and pre-set 15-minute interviews with companies of their choosing. Attendees will also have the chance to earn free prizes and a college scholarship.

Since 2015, Internship Draft Day has been organized by the Northeast Wisconsin Educational Resource Alliance (NEW ERA) and the NEW Manufacturing Alliance (NEWMA). Together, these entities recognized a unique way to work collaboratively on a unified cause: to expand manufacturing career pathways and build a talent pipeline through internships.

Hundreds of college students from Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan participate in the annual Internship Draft Day at Lambeau Field in Green Bay every year. Students showcase talent, curiosity, hustle, and career interest, vying for scholarships, paid internships, and network connections.

Interested students should register at internshipdraftday.com by the registration deadline of October 31.

College Level Examination Program testing at MPTC

Students are reading books and taking notes for exam preparation.

College Level Examination Program (CLEP) testing, sponsored by the College Board, allows students to complete exams in a variety of subjects that are generally covered in the first 2 years of college. CLEP Exam results are accepted for college credit at many colleges and universities throughout the United States- including MPTC.

MPTC has a CLEP Testing Center which allows students, as well as our community members, to take the exams at any of the College campuses.

Now through August 31, 2021, students can save 50% when they register for another CLEP exam.

How to get the discount:

  • Students must have taken another CLEP exam this year (or do so by August 31, 2021).
  • During registration, students enter code CLEPSUMMER at checkout to receive 50% off one exam. (Code is valid from June 1, 2021 through August 31, 2021.)

Information on MPTC’s CLEP testing process is available via the link here: https://www.morainepark.edu/academics/transfer-information/credit-for-prior-learning/credit-by-exam/college-level-examination-program-clep/

Why volunteer? What is in it for you?

operation Christmas CHild

Students, are you looking for a way to give back, network or gain experience before you graduate? If so, consider volunteering. Volunteering can do this and so much more.

Volunteering helps you make a difference by helping others or a business in need. Volunteering can help you gain confidence in your skills that you learned throughout your program and can help provide proof (prove-it statements) that you can use during your upcoming interviews.

Volunteering can also help you advance in your career. Shawn Anchor of Goodthink Inc. researched the impact of Positive Psychology. Shawn Anchor’s research noted that people that reach out and help others are more likely to be engaged at work or get a promotion. Giving back to others can promote happiness and goodwill, and help you throughout your career.

Volunteering also provides an ability to network with individuals with interests similar to you. This can be a great way to showcase your skills and meet others in your career field or interests.

If you are interested in learning more about volunteering activities available in our community, please connect with Anne Lemke, Student Community Impact Coordinator at Moraine Park. Visit the Community Impact webpage at https://www.morainepark.edu/community-impact/.

Your Moraine Park Careers Instructors can help you enhance your resume with the outcomes from your volunteer experience. Connect with us and schedule an appointment for a resume review. We are here to help you! Visit the Career Center webpage at http://morainepark.edu/Careers.

2020 Vision

The year 2020 was a time of the big paradigm shift.  What is a paradigm shift anyway? We learn from Merriam-Webster that it is . . . “a view or way in which we look at things. The way we use to look at the world has changed. What use to be, is no more.”

For example, the way we used to look at work and home life. Wake up, get the kids ready for school, pick up a coffee from Kwik trip or McDonald’s as you drive to work, start at 9 a.m., drive to a local restaurant for lunch, finish up the day and by 5pm you are on your way back home. After a quick supper, get the kids to piano lessons, softball or football practice, maybe head to your bowling or trap shooting league.

Perhaps your scenario is a bit different now. Maybe the kids are home, you double as school teacher, and log in to zoom meetings.  Maybe you have no job to go to (either by your choice or forced upon you). A shift in what use to be.

What now?

Time to reflect on what’s next. Ask yourself – Where do I see myself moving forward? A new way to look at your home and work life – a paradigm shift for sure. Take a look from a fresh perspective. Sarah Young, in her devotional book, encourages us to move forward. “Don’t let recent disappointments and failures define you or dampen your expectations. This is the time to make a fresh start!”

A Fresh Start

You have an opportunity to start new. A chance to re-invent yourself. Not sure where to start? Give a call to one of the Careers Instructors at Moraine Park Technical College. Take a “free” Career Assessment. Create a personal growth plan. We are here to listen, encourage, and support you.
