April is Child Abuse Prevention Month

April is Child Abuse Prevention Month. Every April, Child Abuse Prevention Month recognizes the necessity of communities working together to promote the social and emotional well-being of all children and their families.

In Fond du Lac County alone, 552 cases of child abuse were reported in 2021, according to Nicole Mann, FDL County Social Worker. Children are the foundation of our society, our community and our future. Children raised in loving and supportive environments are more likely to prosper academically and
financially, becoming successful contributing members of society. Wisconsin must be a leader and
champion for all of our children. Research has shown the most effective way to prevent child abuse & neglect is to provide support to families so children can grow up in an environment that supports their well-being. Preventing child abuse and neglect results in better childhoods, ultimately saving millions of dollars currently needed for the services that address the short and long-term effects of abuse on children, their families, and our communities.

Moraine Park Programs Collaborate on Hair Care Techniques for Children with Ethnic Hair

Students practicing hair techniques

Moraine Park Technical College’s Early Childhood Education and Cosmetology programs collaborated earlier this month, Dec. 7, to learn about hair care techniques for children with ethnic hair.

The Cosmetology students used mannequins with textured hair to teach Early Childhood Education students how to detangle, braid, twist and style the hair with elastics.

“A lot of times when we care for children it involves grooming their hair throughout the day,” Anne Paradies, Early Childhood Education instructor, said. “It’s important that students are prepared to care for all hair types.”

The collaboration was spurred by Early Childhood Education student, Monica Dreifuerst, who works at a childcare center.

“We take the children swimming often, and that requires some hair maintenance afterwards,” Dreifuerst said. “I love doing the kids hair, but I realized quicky I didn’t know the best way to care for textured hair. I never want any of the children to feel left out, so I really wanted to learn.”

This training is the first collaboration between Moraine Park’s Cosmetology and Early Childhood Education programs.

“We hope to continue collaborating on this training with future classes,” Paradies said. “The Cosmetology students are the best resource, and it is a great learning experience for everyone involved.”

Moraine Park’s Early Childhood Education program is a 2-year associate degree program. In class, students learn to care for and educate children while playing a key role in their development. Graduates from the program are prepared to work with children from birth to 8-year age range and are well-prepared for a variety of Early Childhood Education roles. STEM in early childhood education

What is STEM in early childhood education?

Students learned how to plan activities in science, technology, engineering and math appropriate for young children. We want young children develop a sound base of skills and love for science, technology, math and engineering. This starts well before elementary school with our educated child care teachers conducting intentional learning activities such as these.

These are some pics of the classroom activities we are doing at MPTC to learn about STEM.

What do students think about this new class?

“STEM was my favorite early childhood class so far! – I loved the STEM class. I enjoyed searching for activities that could be incorporated into the daily routine with children. I also learned that STEM doesn’t have to be difficult. Good teachers are already doing it without realizing it! I love the “Hands on- Minds on questions.” – Tammie

STEM in Early Childhood?

Yes, STEM is being taught to young children to set the foundation for learning Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. This was the first semester that early childhood students learned how to incorporate STEM into classrooms for preschool children. The students from the Fond du Lac and West Bend Campuses took part in a STEM challenge to build a sturdy graham cracker house with frosting.

Here is what students are saying about the new STEM course.

“To be completely honest, I was kind of dreading STEM when I read the class description, but I really did learn a lot. This class not only helped me with my time management skills with the specific due dates for the Unit of Study project, but it also taught me things I will be bringing into my own personal classroom.  I learned what STEM is and how to incorporate it into my classroom. I also learned that in order for the activity to be considered stem it has to incorporate 2 of the subjects.”- Rebecca

“I really liked all of the hands on activities we did, as it gave me ideas of activities to add into my classroom for the kiddos.” – Allison
