Within a profound scene of smiles, laughter, joyful tears and dreams come true, Moraine Park Technical College hosted its 2017 Commencement Ceremony in the Fond du Lac High School Field House on Saturday, May 20.
Nearly 350 graduates took part in the event. In all, the Class of 2017 had nearly 800 graduate candidates complete their studies to receive associate of applied science degrees and technical diplomas.
Keynote speaker, Dr. Morna Foy, impressed upon graduates the need to enjoy the moment, but also look to the future.
“You have definitely arrived at an important milestone, and you’re to be recognized and celebrated for that. That’s why we’re together. But I’d offer that there’s now much more to be done,” Moy said. “Think of it this way: You’re like a coiled spring, or a sling-shot pulled back. You’re ready for launch. That’s what scientists call “potential energy.” It’s the energy an object has because of its position, rather than its motion.
“You’re now in position.” Continue reading

Think life has handed you setbacks too large to overcome? Try telling that to DeWayne Sexton. Losing a mother as a child. Being separated from his siblings growing up. Reuniting only to have his brothers be killed shortly after. Joining the military and losing many close friends in battle. Losing his last remaining brother to a drunk driver. Being diagnosed with cancer. Feeling too old and too lost and too worthless. DeWayne has seemingly been through it all – and has somehow weathered all these struggles to do remarkable things.
One of those remarkable things is being named our 2017 Student of the Year. We couldn’t be more thrilled to give him this honor. To say that DeWayne is deserving is a tremendous understatement. Here’s DeWayne’s story of struggle and finding purpose throughout these setbacks, in his own words: Continue reading

During this special year, with our student awards banquet upcoming, we’ve added a special award to our traditional lineup of offerings: a “Student Veteran of the Year” award.
Taking home this prestigious honor this year is a deserving individual named Carla Stephany, an engineering student at Moraine Park who served in the United States Air Force. She’s an ambitious, hard-working and inspiring woman, and we’re very excited to present her with this award.
In her own words, this is Carla’s background, what brought her to Moraine Park, and what her plans for the future are: Continue reading
Want a motivating story to start your day? Rachel Bestor’s is as good as any. She’s had plenty of ups and downs in her journey to find her right career path, but her perseverance has brought her great things. Here’s Rachel’s story, in her own words:
My name is Rachel Bestor. I was born and raised in Fond du Lac, WI, where I currently reside. My family means the world to me. They supported me throughout my education at Moraine Park and helped me when I was struggling over my assessments and the rollercoaster of happiness and stress. My hobbies include spending my free time with my family and going on outings. We especially enjoy the summer where we can spend much of our time outdoors just enjoying the weather and having fun.
I have one brother and one sister who are both older than me and who both went on to bachelor’s degrees right out of high school. Then there’s me who became a single mom shortly after high school. I was 18, going on 19 when I had my first child and it was a struggle to continue on in college, but I tried it anyway.
That’s when I first chose Moraine Park Technical College. Continue reading
