2021 Commencement Updates

Top of graduate caps with bows and glittered messages

Hello Soon-to-be-Grads!

Believe it or not, we are about 3 months away from the end of our semester and our annual commencement ceremony.

As expected, the College has had to implement changes and make hard decisions to allow for an in-person event to be executed safely.

As previously announced, we are planning for a limited-access in-person 2021 Commencement Ceremony on Saturday, May 22, at 10 a.m. While we are thrilled to make plans for an in-person celebration, the event will undoubtedly look different.

Important details to note:

  • Commencement will be held at the Radisson Conference Center, 625 W. Rolling Meadows Dr., Fond du Lac.
  • To abide by local and state guidelines and to maintain appropriate distancing, guests will not be permitted into the conference center— only graduates and Moraine Park staff executing the ceremony will be permitted into the event space.
  • Family and friends will be able to view the ceremony live. An invite with the event link will be coming soon.
  • Graduate candidates must RSVP to the event. Students who are applying to earn a Technical Diploma or Associate Degree must apply for graduation by March 15 to participate in the ceremony.
    • When applying for graduation, participation in the ceremony must be indicated on the form.
    • College officials will monitor the participation numbers and adjust the ceremony as needed to follow appropriate safety guidelines.
    • If you already applied, and would like to change your RSVP response, email hclark4@morainepark.edu by March 15.
  • Face coverings and temperature checks are required to enter the facility.
  • More details can be found online at MystudentMPTC.

Please know the final details will ultimately depend on the status of COVID-19 and the recommendations from our local and state public health departments as commencement day nears. We will plan to connect with graduation applicants by early April with additional details and decisions.

In the meantime, reach out to Heather Clark at hclark4@morainepark.edu with any questions regarding the 2021 commencement ceremony.

Moraine Park Nursing Students Help Distribute COVID-19 Vaccine

female nursing student in scrubs with stethoscope around her neck.

Moraine Park Technical College nursing students will be assisting Dodge County Public Health and Advocate Aurora Health to administer the COVID-19 vaccination to eligible individuals.

“Our nursing students have experience in helping to distribute vaccines,” Heidi Martin, Moraine Park nursing instructor, said. “We have worked with Dodge County for the past two years, helping at their flu shot clinics for students in grades K-12. We have a great relationship with the County Public Health Nurses and our local healthcare facilities, and currently, they really need our help.”

The Moraine Park nursing students participating are doing so on a volunteer basis. Their volunteer time will count toward community impact requirements at the College.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for our nursing students to give back to the community,” Martin said. “They have the skills needed to truly impact the health of our families, neighbors and friends. My students are excited to be an active part in helping to decrease the severity of this pandemic and ultimately save lives.”

Moraine Park continuously looks for ways to offer hands-on opportunities for students in our local communities.

For information regarding COVID-19 vaccine eligibility and distribution, visit the Wisconsin Department of Health at dhs.wisconsin.gov/covid-19.

Moraine Park Plans for Spring 2021 Commencement

View of aisle at Moraine Park commencement ceremony

Moraine Park Technical College has extended both their public access restrictions and mask-wearing requirements for all campuses- which will remain in effect indefinitely – but, at least through June 30, 2021. The College will remain closed to the general public, and masks will continue to be required on all campuses- even if the statewide mandate ends.

“COVID-19 exposures remain low on our campuses,” Bonnie Baerwald, Moraine Park president, said. “We hope by continuing to limit the number of people on our campuses, we can ensure a successful spring 2021 semester for our students and staff- including the ability to continue in-person classes and hold our annual commencement ceremony.”

As of now, the spring 2021 semester will begin as scheduled on Monday, Jan. 25, and classes will continue to be offered in face-to-face, virtual, and online formats.

Additionally, the College plans to host their 2021 commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 22- if conditions remain as they are or improve. The ceremony will be held outdoors at the Fond du Lac campus, there will be guest limitations to allow for social distancing, and a backup date will be selected in case of inclement weather.

“We are moving forward with our spring semester and planning our 2021 commencement ceremony,” Baerwald said. “While the ceremony will undoubtedly look different, we are confident that we can find a way to celebrate together safely.”

While the College will continue to remain closed to the public, this will not affect Moraine Park’s classes, events, and activities. College leadership will continue to follow recommendations from local public health departments, as well as the Center for Disease Control (CDC) when making decisions for the spring 2021 semester and beyond.

Moraine Park Extends Public Access Restrictions

MPTC

Moraine Park Technical College has extended their limited campus accessibility restrictions until at least Jan. 4, 2021.

In early June, Moraine Park announced its five-phased Reopening Plan and has safely and successfully transitioned through each phase. The College is still expecting to enter phase five as planned, on Oct. 1, with this revision.

“Currently, COVID-19-related illnesses and exposures remain low on our campuses,” Bonnie Baerwald, Moraine Park president said. “While we all know this could change quickly, our leadership team is hopeful the safety measures implemented, as well as our students and staff’s continued accountability for personal health and hygiene, will help these efforts.”

While the College will remain closed to the general public, this change will not affect MPTC classes, events and activities. As this date gets closer, college leaderships will reevaluate the opening date following the health department’s metrics and guidelines.

Moraine Park’s Fall Semester to Begin Aug. 24

students

Moraine Park Technical College’s fall 2020 semester will begin, as scheduled, on Aug. 24, and end Dec. 18. As of now, the College is moving forward with a typical semester schedule.

Fall classes will be offered in a variety of formats—face-to-face, blended (a mix of face-to-face and online), and online. Most program classes will continue to be offered in-person, while many general education classes will have both in-person and online options. The delivery format for all classes will be finalized by July 6.

While a return to campus is a step toward regaining some normalcy, there will be some noticeable changes.

  • Face-to-face classes will have social distancing measures implemented. Classes typically offered online will remain on that platform.
  • Mask-wearing is strongly encouraged, but not required.
  • Cleaning protocols, as recommended by the CDC, have been enhanced.
  • Visitors on campus will be limited.
  • Virtual meetings and learning opportunities will be offered when possible.
  • Bookstore face-to-face operations will be open, with some restrictions.
  • Limited food service/catering and vending will resume Aug. 24, with restrictions.
  • Student activities and gatherings will be restricted to smaller groups.

“The health and safety of the students and employees remain at the forefront and continues to drive the College’s decision making,” Bonnie Baerwald, Moraine Park president, said. “Many accommodations have been put into place to help navigate a safe return for everyone. We look forward to welcoming students and staff back to campus this fall.”

The College is working its way through a phased-in reopening plan, which includes five phases. Currently, the College remains closed to the general public. Moraine Park will begin welcoming back limited staff throughout the summer to prepare for the fall 2020 semester. Details of the reopening plan can be found at morainepark.edu/coronavirus.

MPTC’s Phased Reopening Plan

BD

Moraine Park Technical College has developed a plan for a safe reopening of its facilities. In a communication to employees and students earlier this month, the College released its plan to reopen the College with a slow and phased-in approach. The plan, in its entirety, is dependent on directives from state and national authorities and the overall safety of the local community.

“Developing a fluid and phased reopening plan is necessary to ensuring overall safety,” Bonnie Baerwald, Moraine Park President, said. “This plan is a great foundation for a secure business reopening, and we are all looking forward to reuniting on our campuses again soon.”

The plan, which includes five phases, is expected to span the entire summer and into mid-fall. Phase one and two are being currently being implemented and focus on providing access to students and faculty needing to complete spring semester face-to-face courses. Thanks to the extensive planning by faculty and staff, all classes, including program and contract training, have made accommodations to complete the spring semester. The campus facilities will remain closed. However, Student Services will be open and accessible by appointment, and the schedule will be available on morainepark.edu. The bookstore reopened by appointment only starting on June 1. To make an appointment with the bookstore, visit morainepark.edu/bookstore.

Phase three is targeted for July and will allow for no more than 50 percent of Moraine Park employees to be on campus. The College will remain closed to the general public, and only individuals with college-related business will be allowed on any of the campuses. Services such as dining and library, and offerings on campuses will remain limited to mitigate gathering; social distancing accommodations will be made wherever possible; personal protective equipment will still be available and is strongly encouraged. Student Services and the Bookstore will remain accessible by appointment.

Phase four, which is targeted for August, will expand in-person operations. The College is hoping to resume to an operational state the week of Aug. 17. However, a variety of accommodations are being considered for both students and employees. Fall classes and programming will resume in the delivery format that makes the most sense. This information will be communicated closer to the start of the fall semester. Safety will remain a top priority, sanitation efforts will remain increased, social distancing should continue, and campus events and activities will be allowed but must adhere to local and state guidelines. Bookstore face-to-face operations will resume with restrictions.

Phase five, the planned final phase targeted for October, will reopen all of Moraine Park’s campuses to the public for events, rentals, community programming, on-site walking, and use of our services such as the library.

For additional details (and possible updates) to the phased-in plan, please visit moranepark.edu/coronavirus.

It’s #GivingTuesday! Help MPTC Students During COVID-19

givingtuesday
At a time when we are all experiencing the disruption of the COVID-19 pandemic, generosity can bring people of all backgrounds, faiths and political views together. Generosity gives everyone the power to make a positive change in the lives of those who are struggling and is a fundamental value anyone can act on.

This pandemic has had a significant financial impact on many individuals, including Moraine Park students. Programs are in place to help students supplement education-related costs associated with transitioning to online learning, but we are finding that students are still struggling to meet their day-to-day needs. Child care, layoffs and medical bills are just a few of the struggles that we know are currently affecting the ability to succeed in the digital classroom. The Moraine Park Foundation is working to help students with these needs through our Student Emergency Fund.

All student who have needs are eligible to apply for Student Emergency Fund monies through the Moraine Park Foundation. This one-time grant aims to help students during a time of financial need so they can remain in school and progress toward their desired certificate, diploma or degree.

In 2019, the Foundation awarded more than $8,000 in emergency assistance to 32 students. However, with the increased needs surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic, we hope to meet 100 percent of the requests for emergency assistance from students who are facing financial hardship. For this reason, we ask you to help support Moraine Park students. Please consider helping in one or both of the ways indicated below.

1) Please consider donating to the Student Emergency Fund. The Foundation hopes to help every student who presents a need, in some capacity. Information on how you can contribute to the Student Emergency Fund can be found at morainepark.edu/student-emergency.

2) Help us surround our 2020 graduates with support and congratulatory messages on social media. As you may know, Moraine Park made the difficult decision to cancel the 2020 commencement ceremony. This is heartbreaking for many, and while a shout-out won’t bring back the missed celebration, it will help to keep their milestone accomplishments at the forefront- in a fun way! You can do this by either recognizing them on your own social media page on June 27 (the previously scheduled commencement day) or send a video of you/your organization wishing congratulations to the class of 2020 to featured on Moraine Park’s Facebook page on June 27.

Together we can support students through the Emergency Assistance Fund.

Moraine Park Cancels 2020 Commencement Ceremony

commencement

As a result of the still-evolving COVID-19 pandemic, Moraine Park Technical College has decided to cancel its 2020 commencement ceremony.

In early April, following the initial Safer at Home order, the College announced an alternative date for this year’s ceremony with a disclaimer that if social distancing requirements were still in effect, the event would be canceled. Today, the COVID-19 situation remains very fluid, with many unknowns around the reopening of the state, and with the announcement of Gov. Tony Evers extension of the Safer at Home order and his Badger Bounce Back requirements for reopening the state, the College will be unable to hold a large celebration on June 27.

“Moraine Park had the highest hopes to hold a ceremony this year,” Bonnie Baerwald, Moraine Park president, said. “However, the safety of our students, employees, and communities is of the utmost importance to us. With so many unknowns and safety at the forefront, this is just the right thing to do.”

Baerwald shared a personal announcement with graduates on Wednesday morning that acknowledged their accomplishments, congratulated them on their graduation and detailed how the College plans to help them celebrate from a distance.

“It is no secret that this historic time has resulted in the loss of many things for many people, but our student’s newly gained college degree is not one of those things,” Baerwald said. “They have worked countless hours and devoted years of their lives to better themselves, and we will still celebrate them.”

Additionally, Baerwald extended a personal invitation to the graduates to participate in next year’s ceremony, scheduled for May 2021.
