Work While You Learn

apprentice
Caleb Rahn, Josh Frederick and Tyler Guell

An apprenticeship – what is that? Terri Kollmann, the Applied Technology/Trades Administrative Assistant answers this question quite often for students. It’s not a Boot Camp, and it’s not an Internship. To put it simply – You Work While You Learn.

An apprenticeship is an opportunity to grow in a well-paying, in-demand career. You can attend school while working a full-time job. Both Moraine Park and the company will work to train you on the full scope of your trade.

Caleb Rahn, Josh Frederick, and Tyler Guell are second-year Electrical apprentices.

Caleb works for DeTroye Electric in Oostburg, WI. “I started my apprenticeship right out of high school.”

Josh, an apprentice for Dave Jones, Inc. in Monona, WI, switched careers after 39 years.
“I like that I’m getting paid to learn,” he said.

Tyler is an apprentice for Endries Solar & Electric, LLC. in Sheboygan, WI.
“I was a heavy equipment operator,” he said. “The best decision I ever made was switching careers after 41 years.”

Whether you’re right out of high school or changing careers, with an apprenticeship, you start with a job and build a career!

Do you think an apprenticeship might be right for you or someone you know? Do you have any questions?

Summer Hair Repair

Ahhh, the fun of SUMMER! Picnics, camping, baseball, swimming, vacations and of course, endless hours in the sun!! There’s nothing better than summer!

But wait! All those hours of soaking in the sun and cooling off in the pool can wreak havoc on your hair! (Hey guys, this goes for you too!) So what can you do to help prevent damage to your locks? Can you fix what’s already been done?

Moraine Park’s Cosmetology Instructor Eileen Bouchard gives us some helpful hints to prevent damaging your hair any further this summer.

  • Use a styling product with an SPF factor.
  • Condition your hair after each shampoo.
  • Wear a hat when you’re in the sun
  • Maintain a regular haircut or trim. (This might be a great time to make an appointment at our Moraine Park Salon! Click here for more info! )

Do you feel your hair is beyond repair? Reader’s Digest says you can re-hydrate your hair and scalp with a nutrient rich treatment mask. The protective oils, butters, and extracts will replenish dry, frizzy and damaged hair. You should also stop heat styling your sun-damaged hair for a bit. Heat styling can cause damage all on its own, why not give your hair a break? (Pun intended!) Here’s one last simple helpful hint! Cotton pillowcases are absorbent, causing moisture to be drawn out of your hair as you sleep, so switch to a silk pillowcase.

I hope these tips help get you through what we have left of summer looking fabulous! After all, August is like the Sunday of Summer, it comes too fast and never stays long enough!

A Helping Hand

Nathan Automotive

I’d like you to meet Nathan Zielieke, an Automotive Tech student at MPTC. Nathan gave me a helping hand, literally, at Kwik Trip a few weeks back, and I feel he deserves positive recognition for his good deed!

Let’s just say I MAY have been quite a bit overdue for an oil change when I happened to see him leaving the store asked him “How far over is TOO far overdue?” Without hesitation, Nathan asked, “Would you like me to check your oil level?” I declined at first, but he kindly insisted and I’m glad he did!

He pointed out “Your oil should really be up to this line on the stick, and it’s way down here, you should probably go into the store and buy a quart. I’ll come in with you.”

Nathan didn’t stop there, he proceeded to put the oil in – cupping his hand in place of a funnel. What an upstanding citizen and all around nice guy!

When I asked Nathan how he became interested in cars and working on them, his face lit up, “I’ve been working in the shop, tearing down engines and restoring old cars with my dad and grandpa since before I could walk. My dad and I keep my grandpa’s old cars running and bring them to car shows. I haven’t missed the Iola Car Show and Swap Meet since I was six.”

“Right now I’m working on turning the first car my dad bought at age 11 into a drag racing car, it’s a 1958 Ford Custom 300. I’m also restoring a 1984 F350 and getting a 65 F250 running. I can fix anything that has an engine 4-wheelers, boats, lawnmowers, snowmobiles, dirt-bikes, you name it.”

I asked Nathan about his time here at Moraine Park and what his future holds he said, “I like it here, I enjoy the instructors, the real-life experiences and all the joking around. I work in a shop in Fond du Lac right now, but after I graduate next year, I want to find a job in restoration. Someday, I want to own a shop restoring old cars – nothing beats a classic.”

Thank you, Nathan, for being such a great guy- and for using your Moraine Park skills for those in need!

Student Life

Uniquely United

three students standing of fireplace

We should share our similarities and celebrate our differences.

M. Scott Peck

I had the opportunity to talk candidly with three outstanding Moraine Park students. Every student who walks the halls of Moraine Park is on an individual path. As you read the stories below, it will become evident that each student has different interests and backgrounds, but what they have in common is the fact that right now they are students at Moraine Park, working hard to achieve their goals.

Linda Johnson

Linda is from Chicago, but after liking what she saw on the Moraine Park web site, she applied for the Nursing program and moved to Fond du Lac. She had attended school elsewhere previously but liked the resources, scholarships and other ways MPTC could help her accomplish her goals.

“What I enjoy most about Moraine Park is the teamwork and that everyone is so nice,” Linda said. “Everyone has made me feel very welcome, and like I can do this, I can accomplish my goals!”

Something people may not know about her?

“I was abused for most of my life,” she said. “I know I didn’t deserve that, but I’m stronger now.”

She has overcome many obstacles and has set high goals for herself. Five years she hopes to have her associate degree in nursing, own a business, as well as purchase a car and a house.”

Tierney Cayo

Tierney is from Iron River, Michigan. She has been a student here for two years and is a work-study at the Fond du Lac campus front entrance.

“I chose the IT Web Development program,” Tierney said. “Moraine Park’s program emphasizes on back end coding, which is what I was looking for. I love the smaller class sizes, and my teachers, advisor, and the staff are very nice.”

Something people may not know about her?

I like paranormal horror stories,” she said. “I also like writing them. I’m making a choose your own adventure game for one of the stories I wrote.”

Five years from now, her goal is to have her Bachelor degree in software engineering and own a video game business with her boyfriend.

Jonathan Diaz

Jonathan has been a cosmetology student at Moraine Park since last fall. He came to the College for the convenience of our location, and the cost.

“I like the great communication between staff and other students here,” he said. “Everyone knows each other.”

Something people may not know about him?

“I am a drag queen,” Jonathan said. “I have performed in Madison, Sheboygan, Neenah, and Fond du Lac.”

Jonathan’s five-year plan is to finish his cosmetology degree, work in a salon, and pursue a degree in fashion design.

“I want to make costumes and cut and style for stage performances.”

I encourage you to take a moment to say hello to the person next to you in the hallway, classroom, cafeteria, or anywhere in between. Strike up a conversation! Ask about their interests, goals, and their Moraine Park experience, you may find that you have more in common than what you think! At the very least you will meet someone new, and perhaps you will become a part of their Moraine Park journey.
