Our Business Practice Firm class requires us to explore the real business world within a classroom setting. Our team collaborated on many small business ideas, ultimately deciding on a candle company. With the holiday season upon us, we decided candles not only make great gifts, but they become increasingly popular as we near the cooler winter months.
Moraine Park Technical College learned recently that it received approval for approximately $550,000 in Workforce Advancement Training (WAT) grants from the Wisconsin Technical College System. A total of six grant applications were submitted covering training in the following areas:
- Continuous Improvement
- Customer Relationships and Sales
- Organizational Leadership
- Industrial Maintenance
- Manufacturing Technical Skills
- Supervision and Team Building
All six grant applications were approved with a total of 31 companies being served in this consortium, representing the largest amount in WAT grant funding received by Moraine Park since the grants first became available several years ago. With an emphasis on training incumbent workers, WAT grants support area organizations’ investments in their workplace training programs. Customized training developed under these grants are designed to help increase the skills of an organization’s existing employees, transform business processes, improve quality, boost productivity and improve overall competitiveness for participating businesses. Typical grant coverage averages around 50% of the organization’s total training investment for eligible training conducted between July 1, 2017 and July 31, 2018.
Employers who are interested in obtaining more information about applying for next year’s Workforce Advancement Training grant funds should contact Moraine Park’s Economic and Workforce Development team for more information by calling (920)924-3449 or via e-mail at firstname.lastname@example.org.

Her determination to succeed and grow lead her to continuing her education with Ottawa University where she is pursuing a Master of Business Administration with a leadership development concentration. She credits Moraine Park for helping her gain confidence and discover what she really wanted to do with her life. Here’s Sarah’s story in her own words.
Many schools claim to provide real-life experiences, but it is unusual when a class project leads to a job.
Moraine Park’s Associate of Science in Accounting degree provides a career preparation project within Accounting 3. Students create a professional résumé and cover letter and practice interviewing skills based on an actual job posting.
Initially, student Allysa Larsen picked a general accounting position. Eventually, she decided to a select a position that better matched her goals.
More and more companies nationally and locally are trying to deal with data, and sometimes lots of it coined “big data.”
Demand is high for people who can manage and collect all this data or information; analyze it to spot patterns or gaps; draw conclusions and insights; and then be able to translate it so management and users can understand it to make better strategic or operational decisions.
If you’re envious of artistic talent and creativity, then walking around Moraine Park’s Fond du Lac campus last Wednesday night would have been a difficult adventure for you, for sure.
Graduating students from Moraine Park Technical College’s programs showcased their talents at the College’s Portfolio Showcase.
There were animations, drawings, designs, photos and, well, lots of cool stuff!

Want a motivating story to start your day? Rachel Bestor’s is as good as any. She’s had plenty of ups and downs in her journey to find her right career path, but her perseverance has brought her great things. Here’s Rachel’s story, in her own words:
My name is Rachel Bestor. I was born and raised in Fond du Lac, WI, where I currently reside. My family means the world to me. They supported me throughout my education at Moraine Park and helped me when I was struggling over my assessments and the rollercoaster of happiness and stress. My hobbies include spending my free time with my family and going on outings. We especially enjoy the summer where we can spend much of our time outdoors just enjoying the weather and having fun.
I have one brother and one sister who are both older than me and who both went on to bachelor’s degrees right out of high school. Then there’s me who became a single mom shortly after high school. I was 18, going on 19 when I had my first child and it was a struggle to continue on in college, but I tried it anyway.
That’s when I first chose Moraine Park Technical College.
