Dream Big and Have Fun Round 5!

Criminal Justice students at Boys & Girls Club On April 24, 2018, Fond du Lac Boys and Girls Club kids in grades 5-11 were excited to meet and learn with Moraine Park Corrections students!

Fond du Lac Boys and Girls Club Director of Teen Services Dillon Wiese said, “Our teens were given the fun opportunity to participate in a presentation done by the Criminal Justice students from Moraine Park. They learned about careers in the police department, sheriff’s department, prisons and even about becoming a detective!  The Criminal Justice students brought “Bob”, handcuffs, and fingerprinting activities for Club teens to try out. What a great experience for all those who participated!  A big thank you to the Moraine Park Criminal Justice students and their Instructor Joan Barfield for providing our teens with a chance to learn about this important career.”

The idea for “Dream Big and Have Fun” began with the Moraine Park Technical College District Student Government President/IT Club Vice President, Phil Conley.  Phil was passionate about helping kids after volunteering with the IT Club internet safety project at Boys and Girls Club last year.  He had an awesome brainstorm to reach out to all the Moraine Park Clubs through Student Senate and make a plan for each one to visit the Boys & Girls Club to share some learning and fun from their programs/careers.  Clubs will be featured all throughout the months of March and April.  This is a great opportunity for Moraine Park students to earn service learning hours and for Fond du Lac Boys and Girls Club members to get excited about future career choices!

Mock Prison Riot

Everyone has seen the television shows that depict the nation’s prisons.  From Orange is the New Black to 60 Days In, the television series show a highly dramatized version of life in prison.  After all, drama sells and reality is not always glamorous.  What about a prison riot, what would that experience be like?

The Criminal Justice Corrections Club get to experience just that, a prison riot.  Next week, the several members of the Corrections Club will embark on a trip for West Virginia to participate in a Mock Prison Riot.  The Mock Prison Riot is a annual training event hosted by the West Virginia Department of Corrections.  The training event welcomes tactical teams from around the world to participate in the different training scenarios.  Last year, over 20 different countries and over 30 different states were represented at the event held at a decommissioned prison in Moundsville, West Virginia.

What do the students get to do?  The students participate in scenarios and act as inmates creating the disturbance.  The different tactical teams will address the situation presented to them in the scenario and restore order.  Moraine Park students are able to witness the team work and communication skills  involved with being part of the criminal justice field.

In addition to the scenarios, students are also offered the opportunity to attend various workshops and seminars to enhance their knowledge base.  As the week progresses, students are also able to interact with the international contingencies to gain insights on how different countries handle crime and incarceration and discuss what problems different areas of the world may be encountering.

Crime scenes: Hollywood vs. Reality

criminal-justice-mock-crime-scene with Moraine Park students

If you watch any amount of prime-time television, you’ve undoubtedly seen Hollywood’s portrayal of a crime scene. The detectives swoop in, witty banter is exchanged, and they miraculously find some overlooked clue just in time for a dramatic pause and commercial break.

Is it like that in real life? Well, yes and no.  Continue reading
