Little Free Library – Read in Color Initiative at MPTC

Take a book. Start a conversation. Change our world.

Moraine Park is bringing the Little Free Library (LFL) – Read in Color initiative to all three campus libraries. The initiative brings diverse books to LFL boxes across the country, creating a more inclusive and equitable world for all.

At Moraine Park, the launch of the Little Free Library will feature books that provide perspectives on racism and social justice; celebrate BIPOC, LGBTQ+, and other marginalized voices; and experiences from many identities for readers.

This project was inspired by MPTC’s Innovation 2025 values of collaboration, continuous improvement, impactful learning, and inclusivity, and is brought to the College by Moraine Park’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Cross-Functional team in partnership with Student Services.

“Little Free Library believes everyone should be able to see themselves in the pages of a book,” said LFL Executive Director Greig Metzger. “We also believe a broader awareness of the diverse life experiences in America can break down barriers and nurture a deeper understanding of our society’s inequities.”

The books can be found on the Fond du Lac campus near the library. This initiative will be brought to the Beaver Dam and West Bend campuses by the end of the summer.

Uniquely United

We should share our similarities and celebrate our differences.

M. Scott Peck

I had the opportunity to talk candidly with three outstanding Moraine Park students. Every student who walks the halls of Moraine Park is on an individual path. As you read the stories below, it will become evident that each student has different interests and backgrounds, but what they have in common is the fact that right now they are students at Moraine Park, working hard to achieve their goals.

Linda Johnson

Linda is from Chicago, but after liking what she saw on the Moraine Park web site, she applied for the Nursing program and moved to Fond du Lac. She had attended school elsewhere previously but liked the resources, scholarships and other ways MPTC could help her accomplish her goals.

“What I enjoy most about Moraine Park is the teamwork and that everyone is so nice,” Linda said. “Everyone has made me feel very welcome, and like I can do this, I can accomplish my goals!”

Something people may not know about her?

“I was abused for most of my life,” she said. “I know I didn’t deserve that, but I’m stronger now.”

She has overcome many obstacles and has set high goals for herself. Five years she hopes to have her associate degree in nursing, own a business, as well as purchase a car and a house.”

Tierney Cayo

Tierney is from Iron River, Michigan. She has been a student here for two years and is a work-study at the Fond du Lac campus front entrance.

“I chose the IT Web Development program,” Tierney said. “Moraine Park’s program emphasizes on back end coding, which is what I was looking for. I love the smaller class sizes, and my teachers, advisor, and the staff are very nice.”

Something people may not know about her?

I like paranormal horror stories,” she said. “I also like writing them. I’m making a choose your own adventure game for one of the stories I wrote.”

Five years from now, her goal is to have her Bachelor degree in software engineering and own a video game business with her boyfriend.

Jonathan Diaz

Jonathan has been a cosmetology student at Moraine Park since last fall. He came to the College for the convenience of our location, and the cost.

“I like the great communication between staff and other students here,” he said. “Everyone knows each other.”

Something people may not know about him?

“I am a drag queen,” Jonathan said. “I have performed in Madison, Sheboygan, Neenah, and Fond du Lac.”

Jonathan’s five-year plan is to finish his cosmetology degree, work in a salon, and pursue a degree in fashion design.

“I want to make costumes and cut and style for stage performances.”

I encourage you to take a moment to say hello to the person next to you in the hallway, classroom, cafeteria, or anywhere in between. Strike up a conversation! Ask about their interests, goals, and their Moraine Park experience, you may find that you have more in common than what you think! At the very least you will meet someone new, and perhaps you will become a part of their Moraine Park journey.

Transgender 101

Transgender 101 poster

Every year since 2010, March 31st has been celebrated as the International Transgender Day of Visibility. This designation is to support trans communities throughout the world, to bring attention to the accomplishments of trans people, and to fight cissexism and transphobia by spreading knowledge. Unlike the Transgender Day of Remembrance, which is recognized annually on November 20th, this is a day of EMPOWERMENT! Continue reading

How one student’s culture impacts his education

National Hispanic Heritage Month (Mes de la Herencia Hispana) 2016 began on Thursday, September 15 and ends on Saturday, October 15. September 15 is the anniversary of independence of five Latin American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. Mexico, Chile and Belize also celebrate their independence day during this period and Columbus Day (Día de la Raza) is October 12. Diversity Relations Office decided this would be a great opportunity to introduce the community to Hispanic and Latino heritage.

Jose Bustos is a Hispanic student attending Fond du Lac campus pursuing his degree in Information Technology (IT). I interviewed him to learn more about his cultural experience as a student here at Moraine Park.  Continue reading

A reflection from a new MPTC employee

Moraine Park Diversity Specialist, Nicolle Schroeder

Back to school!  What emotion does that bring to you?  Inevitably, we all feel something when we hear those words.  Maybe even a “whah-hooo” slips out knowing that our own kids will be back to learning.

For years as a high school Spanish Teacher, back to school came with mixed emotions.  Excitement to be able to start fresh with new groups of teenagers but dread for all the work it entailed.  This year is different.  Continue reading
