Every year since 2010, March 31st has been celebrated as the International Transgender Day of Visibility. This designation is to support trans communities throughout the world, to bring attention to the accomplishments of trans people, and to fight cissexism and transphobia by spreading knowledge. Witches and Minions and Moldbusters? OH MY!

Assorted Moraine Park Halloween costumes

The Moraine Park Association for Career and Technical Education (MPACTE) held their Annual Costume Contest on all the MPTC campuses Monday, October 31st. Students and staff were encouraged to dress up and Trick or Treat to a location at each of the campuses to have their photograph taken and receive a Fair Trade Chocolate treat.

The photos were added to an online voting platform and shared through MPTC’s social media channels for students, staff and the public to choose their three favorites. With over 40 contestants, the competition was fierce, but several groups and individuals moved to the top of the list.

How one student’s culture impacts his education

National Hispanic Heritage Month (Mes de la Herencia Hispana) 2016 began on Thursday, September 15 and ends on Saturday, October 15. September 15 is the anniversary of independence of five Latin American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. Mexico, Chile and Belize also celebrate their independence day during this period and Columbus Day (Día de la Raza) is October 12. Diversity Relations Office decided this would be a great opportunity to introduce the community to Hispanic and Latino heritage.

Jose Bustos is a Hispanic student attending Fond du Lac campus pursuing his degree in Information Technology (IT). I interviewed him to learn more about his cultural experience as a student here at Moraine Park.  Continue reading

TRIO is a group of programs funded by the U.S. Department of Education to assist low-income and first-generation students through their educational career. Supplying a Solution

MPACTE members with household supply donations to Solutions Center

MPACTE (Moraine Park Association for Career & Technical Education) held a household supply drive throughout the month April 2016 in honor of Sexual Abuse Awareness and Prevention Month. Local domestic abuse and homeless shelters were targeted as the recipients of these efforts. Each campus asked staff to donate household supply items the local shelters could utilize. Moraine Park Technical College provides hands-on learning experiences so students will be able to move into careers with the necessary skill sets. Many individuals throughout our district are interested in returning to school or continuing their education, but they aren’t sure where to start. Several departments at MPTC have been working with individuals and organizations throughout our communities to remove this gap and showcase all the resources we offer. Continue reading
