Meet Emma. She decided to try Cosmetology at the suggestion of her hairstylist.
After being homeschooled by her Mom and attending UW-FDL and UW-Washingon County for general education classes, she thought, “why not.”
Emma then started her cosmetology career here at Moraine Park in January 2017. Emma has already been hired as a receptionist at Lavish Salon and Spa in Mayville. She plans on taking her boards along with her classmates on Nov. 6, 2017 so she is ready to start working on clients as soon as she graduates in December 2017.
Moraine Park’s 2017 Great Pink Pumpkin 5K Run/Walk featured roughly 525 pink-clad participants and raised more than $11,000 for Breast Cancer Recovery and student scholarships.
Breast Cancer Recovery is an organization whose mission is to provide environments for women breast cancer survivors to heal emotionally.
CURLS! Some of us are born with them and some of us are not. There is hope for us not born with them … THE PERMANENT WAVE, also known as a “perm.”
The first attempt at creating curly hair was back in 1872. The beginning inventions involved thermal methods and no chemicals but that proved to degrade the hair. Another attempt was to wrap the hair in a spiral around rods connected to a machine with an electric heating device, then sodium hydroxide was applied and the hair was heated to 212 °F (100 °C) or more for an extended period of time.
The first attempts resulted in hair being burnt off and scalp burns.

Most of us, by now, have heard of or know someone that has or is homeschooling their children. But how many of us really know what that means?
Does it mean a family that is anti-social? Does it mean those children are not getting the socialization they need? Does it mean those families are “wacko” as I have heard us called?
Week 1 is in the books. The new Cosmetology students started off the week diving into perming, hair coloring, haircutting and hairstyling classes. In the first 8 weeks they will practice on their manikins and also each other.
Homeschool parent’s run the school and home, and that can be quite a balancing act. Keeping both running smoothly (well, at least moving forward; not too sure how smooth sometimes) involves time management, curriculum prep, teaching, motivating, coaching, and the list goes on and on. And I should know! My name is Kim Harrington. I’m the administrative assistant of General Education here at Moraine Park, and I’ve lived this journey first-hand by homeschooling my children.
